O/S front footwell-drop the kick panel down, its on the left hand side.
Remove the 4 phillips screws holding the kick panell on below the steering wheel-3 of the screws may have colour coded plastic caps on.
The kick trim can be tight coming out from the centre console-it overlaps and can be awkward.
Once out you need to go to the left hand side of the footwell. You will see an air vent pointing down for footwell ventillation-remove the plastic clip(spike)and pull out the vent.
Then with a tourch if you look further back you will see a thin black plastic panel about 30cm long vertical with a black plastic knob in the middle-turn this knob 90 degrees and this panel will fall out.
You now have access to the filter. When you withdraw the filter note which way round it is.
With the new one you will notice although it is intact/one piece it does come in 3 sections.Break the sections(the old one should be like it already)This is so you can get around the clutch pedal.

It's a bit more involved than that albeit in the right location. Take a look at

and you'll find full instructions.

Remember...this description is for a LHD car! RHD is easier because you don't have to muck about with the glove-box. I did it once on an E36...don't remember it being as easy as they suggest though!...LOL!!! Hands, arms and body contortion were needed as I recall!
Don't like doing it on my wife's E34 much either!...Next time I may just 'forget' to re-install it
