My gearbox in my 1998 530d is knackered! It is the 5L40-E gearbox, they are very thin on the ground in the breakers yards, but there are more of the stronger 5L50-E gearboxs about. They seem to be nigh on identical to each other and plus they can take more torque (and mine has been remapped).
All of the repair manuals that I read are for both gearboxes

http://media.gm.com/division/2004_pro

www.bmwmotorsports.org/BMW_docs/electran1.pdf

www.shinseiauto.com/japanese/transtar/usgm5l40e04.pdf

www.transtec.com/tech_insert/IS-5L40E-1.pdf

Will the 5L50-E gearbox mate up to my 530d and will the electronic control module work without reprogramming? They both use the siemens GS 20 control system. But will the newer gearbox have the correct connectors to plug straight into the 1998 contorl unit? (Apparently the control units changed in 1998 from a 88 pin to a 134 pin unit. Mine was built in December 1998 !! But only three of 5 connectors blocks are used in the new 134 pin unit!)

Somebody out there must know, or have tried to mate a different gearbox to the 3.0litre diesel engine!!

Help!

I can give you a definate answer monday when I go back to work.
To know which control unit you have you need to open the bonnet and on the passaner side towards the screen is a box(there is a cover half covering it that needs to be removed). The lid is held on by 4,5mm allen key bolts.Take the lid off and if you see one of the control units has blue connectors(5 seperate ones as opposed to the early black one which was just a long connector)then its the later 124 pin control unit GS20.

Let you know about the fittment-I have a matrix in my tool box

I have looked into it and from what I can tell there are 2 options but both are the 5l40-e boxxes. The Getrag numbers GA5R360R and GA5R390R -the 360 and 390 representing tourque.
The 5L50-E appears to be the V8's but I cant cross the 5L number to the Getrag number-can you get the number from the plate on the gearbox that you are looking at-normally a green plate with a number simillar to above.
The chances of the DDE and EGS control units working correctly together with a different gearbox are unlikely because of the tourque settings and configuation of the box.But if you can get me a Get. number from the box I will be able to tell you whats its from and the differences.

Ok, So I gotta stick with the 5L40-E, but looking at page 6 of www.bmwmotorsports.org/BMW_docs/electran1.pdf there are a few other cars I could knab the box out of, is the three series bell housing the same as the five series bell housing? The strange thing is, it doesn`t list the 530d in the list of cars that the gearbox is used in. What I need is a wish list of other cars that will have a autobox that will bolt straight onto my car 1998 530d. Blackspider your help is keeping me sane!!

The current models with that box fitted are;
E39 3.0d m57
E46 3.0d m57 and m57 tu
E53 3.0d m57 and m57 tu
E83 3.0d m57tu

Thats using the gs20 control unit

The rest use a 6 speed gearbox and gs19 or other control units.

The E53 and E83 are the 4x4 units and have a transfere unit bolted to the rear of the gearbox
