The volume knob on my 2001 E46 Business CD head unit has 'come adrift'. It's all lose and wobbly. The volume up and down still work but the on/off click function is gone. Fortunately it is ON so I can just turn the volume down but I hate having broken stuff on my car. The stealers lived up to their reputation - £440 + VAT for a new one!!!!!

I have a bid in on one on fleabay but is there any way at all these can be repaired? Anyone know? I'm guessing something plastic inside has broken and just needs a new bit, rather than a completely new head unit - but the dealers aren't remotely interested. Cheers.

There were a number of them up for sale on eBay last time I looked, so that is probably your best bet to be honest.

Have you taken the knob off to have a look? Pull it

Thanks for the response but I'm worried that if I pull the knob off, I won't be able to get it back on again because the splined shaft will just be pushed back and disappear back into the unit (it's a very tight fit IIRC from removing it before) - then I'll be completely stuffed.

Sounds like you're pretty stuffed already. What have you got to lose?

It still works - just won't turn off. If I take it out and can't get it working again - then I'm stuffed. Anyway, just got a replacement on fleabay, so hopefully will be sorted.
