Ok who can answer me this:

The current 5-series has hidden exhausts, except sport models which have them shown. That's approximately it anyway.

So why does every single new 520d have an exposed exhaust? Especially when it's a horrible single floppy one? Is it so you can tell it's the basic model? Surely all the 520ds aren't sport models?

Actually, I am not sure if you are correct there. The 530i, 525d and 530d models all have exposed exhausts. I am also pretty sure of the 535d but not sure about the recently dropped 520i models. It is odd, but you can no longer tell the difference between a diesel or petrol model in M Sport trim at least....

On the old E39 this was definitely the case. All models bar the M5 and those post 2000 face-lift in Sport trim had hidden exhausts. So you could have a 520i and badge it up as a 540i and its not simple to tell. Post 2000 face-lift in sport trim had an exposed tail-pipe due to dropped rear valance - but 530d's had down-turned ones and the 530i/525i models had straight through ones....

Why on earth do I know this? I am so sad and need to get out more.... hehe

it is to do with co2 emissons, the older engined cars, required down point exhausts ( hidden ) on diesel models, however thenewer deisels are cleaner, and therefore do not now need to be hidden. petrols have always been unhidden as they are cleaner. there is no difference between se or sport.

all new e60s will have exhausts that are not hidden.

Strange I must be mistaken, I thought some E60s had hidden exhausts. My bad.

Ditto what stockhatcher says.

Reason for why they now are is that they have DPF (diesel particulate filter) fitted as standard in the exhaust, as do most models now, only the 1 series and 318d/320d have it as a option.

The very early E60 diesels had hidden/downturned exhausts - no particulate filter as already stated. How sad are we?????????

BMW did't want the risk of the car belching a "bit of black" on acceleration so they pointed the pipe at the floor to make it less noticable - now they don't burp black smoke anymore they can stick out and be proud - sad I will admit
