can anyone help...
i own a 2002 bmw x5 3.0td with 60,000 miles on the clock.i have recently started having problems starting the car .it is taking about 10 turns before starting although it does seem better starting from cold.my bmw dealer has told me that possibly the iinjectors are failing as the return pressure is higher than normal.they reckon it could cost around £2000 to sort the problem.has anyone had anything similar.the car performs and dosent smoke.can you help please.

Most of the long cranking problems I do if not all are down to an injector failure.
1 or more of the injectors will have an excessive run of-this means the high pressure injector rail that feeds the injectors fuel cant build up enough pressure or takes a long time to build up the pressure.
There is only one fix and that is to replace the injector/injectors unless you happen to know someone that can overhaul them.

Also the supply pumps can cause the same fault as too can the camshaft sensor.

Someone is bound to say glow plugs, but on modern deisel engines they play a small part in warming the cylinder-before they were used to warm the cylinders and atomise the deisel.

From time to time we see High pressure pump failures-but this is normally none start.

The price is for the 6 injectors and about right, but make sure they give you a warning first if they cant get the injectors out-this can lead to extra cost.Saying that they may well know an engineering firm that will come out to remove them for £50.This is just to let you know sometimes the injectors can be stuck fast and extra work maybe needed, therefore more cost.

As BMW have told us,if one injector only has failed then that one can be replaced-If 2 injectors have failed then all 6 should be replaced.

You can either go the dealer way and grit your teeth while you pay,or you can go to an indie and perhaps have the 1 or just the 2 done-You could even get a second hand set from www.fabdirect.com

First of all you need to have the fault confirmed as the injectors, they will carry out a diagnosis test,a smooth running test(missfire)and leak off test.

I must agree with Black Spider we check ours with a leak return bottle kit, having a few seized ones i have made up a large side hammer which screws on the top of the injector, a few wacks and any siezed one come out
