E46 2003 330i Touring Fuel Consumption

The wife has just acquired a 330i auto Touring.

I am surprised the fuel consumption only seems to be about 21mpg around town and 28mpg driven carefully on a run.

Does this seem excessive?

Getting 30+ mpg on a run from a carefully driven 330 manual is no problem atall, so your wife's auto figures are probably about right.

I was getting 17 mpg round town for a while until I realise it was my idiot driving. Have since worn lighter shoes and now get 21 pmg approx with 26 mpg on longer runs at fast motorway speeds and can get 30 mpg if I drive like my mum.

I used to get 30-31mpg on average from my 330i sport

I'm getting anywhere from 29-32 from mine. It's a manual though, so may make some difference.
