X5 4.6iS any opinion appreciated
Discussion
Hi guys and girls,
I am looking at buying a 4.6iS for the missus to replace her B3 3.3 Alpina Coupe. She had a back op many years ago and her back is slowly starting to deteriorate again so she finds getting in and out of the B3 a bit of a strain. She absolutely loves the B3 but an X5 would be far easier to get in and out of.
She likes performance so the 4.6 I personally reckon is the one to go for (4.8 too expensive
) I've found a sapphire black with black leather 4.6 for sale with 60,000 miles on the clock. Full BMWSH and as it is being sold by a BMW dealer it will come with a years warranty etc. Are there any major faults that I should be looking for. I have heard that the V8's can have problems with the bore coating. It will probably do around 6000 miles a year. What are the service intervals like and is servicing expensive and would you recommend renewing the warranty again next year.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated,
cheers Graeme

I've had one for about 14 months and 28,000 miles now (and I'm probably going to sell it soon so let me know if you're interested...)
I have had t serviced twice, at around 32k miles and then again at about 46k (2,000 miles ago). The first one was cheap (inspection 1 and nothing else, so about £300) the second one was an oil service plus disks and pads all round, and 1 tyre pressure sensor. The bill came to about £900 for this, but front disks and rear disks and pads had lasted almost 50,000 miles. Oh, and I had to replace both keys (at about £80 each!) as they both stopped working around the same time.
Tyre wear has been excellent - I changed the originals at about 30k miles, and they are about half worn 20k miles later. £940 a set.
So costs so far:
About 350 miles on a tank - this is about 18mpg, 21mpg possible on a run
Insurance - about £500 a year
Servicing and bits - about £500 a year
Tyres - average about £500 a year
This is for 20,000 miles year. Depreciation has been OK too - I paid about £32k for it at 2 years old and 22,000 miles (over £60k new). I reckon it is worth about £10k less than that now (I've been offered part exchange offers from £20k to £24k against an RS4 or M5).
I've been really pleased with it. it has been completely reliable, comfortable, makes a great noise, is pretty quick, and hasn't cost the earth to run.
(P.S if you're interested - 2003/53, Estoril Blue, black leather, 49k miles, FBMWSH, TV/sat nav wuth tv in motion, Dension ipod link, privacy glass, dog guard, retractable load floor, removeable tow bar, heated seats and probably some other bits I have forgotten).

Well I have done the deed and agreed to buy a May 2003 4.6iS from Sytners in Chigwell for £24K with 59,000 miles on the clock. She only does around 5000 miles a year in the BM so I am not overtley worried about racking up the mileage. It will come with a years BMW warranty and a new MOT. The car will be serviced and the bonnet repainted prior to collecting the car.
They have given me a reasonable px on her Alpina if I wish to do so and overall so far I have been very impressed with their service. Jim Sutcliffe was the salesman and has proved to be a fair guy to deal with. I did not try to break his balls on the price of the X5 and in return he has gone further than I would have expected to make sure the car was correct. The car was recently serviced but it will be serviced again and a couple of minor stone chips on the bonnet that in my opinion would not have necessitated a repaint. The sales manager is very clued up on Alpina (I bought the car advertised as sapphire black two years ago, he pointed out that it was in fact cosmos black, completely unimportant I know but he then went on to say that the 3.3 litre Alpina was based upon a 328i shell which I knew and that they use the 328i engine block and bore it out to 3.3 as it is steel and far stronger than the 330 block which is ali, which I did not know, a true petrolhead) and has offered £9250 for Kerry's car. Not a bad price when I consider two other dealers one independant offered £8000 max.
I cannot remember the last time a main dealer impressed me so I thought it was only fair to share the suprise.
