1. Wheels out of balance
2. Carbs need setting up

Thats it!

Trackdemon,

Oh, if it were only so simple!

Firstly, the 635CSi ...doesn't have carbs! I'm no injection expert so I'll leave the potential causes of those symptoms to others more knowledgable.

However, the shimmy under braking could be a myriad of things...by all means check the wheel balancing because it's the cheapest thing to do...but I'll bet that it's not that!

Does it happen on braking just between about 60-50 mph?

Discs? Calipers sticking? Control arm bushes? (I'd actually put that at the top of my list if I really were a betting man!), drag links? The list is almost endless!

One of the best places to get lots of proper advice on this is Roadfly.com

Good luck!

I had similar problems with mine. The first time I had the "wheel wobble" problem, new calipers sorted it out. Second time it was due to a warped (or perhaps mis-aligned) disc.

As for the tendancy to run too rich, I was told that this is a characteristic of the engine and that they do need fairly frequent tuning (at least once a year) to keep them running right.

Good luck sorting it out DJ.

Wheel wobble when braking hard can also be caused by worn tie bar bushes. Jack the front of car up and have a good poke around, there are two tie bars on each side. If they are a bit worn you can get vibration through the wheel that feels like warped brake discs.

Of course it could be worn discs but it is just a suggestion!

Hello mate a fine choice in motor may i add

The wheel wobble could be the balancing or as i found out on mine there's a little mod that the garages do to the bracket to the end of the stearing rack (i think). Basicly it's not strong enough and as these are extremely front heavy it suffers considerably. Give Highams Park Motor Co a call on 0208-523-3443, ask to speak to Clive or Stuart and explain this, they'll give you the possiably faults straight away.

The smell of fumes could be a number of things to be honest and again i'd suggest that you call my specialist who deals with my BMW's as stated above.

Hope this is of any help.

M3John.

All depends on how your using it to be honest. When i had mine, driving it around central London i'd only just manage a bit more than that but i remember a day where i drove all the way to Somerset (sp?) on just over half a tank. yikes To say i was impressed was an understatement.

nice car, always loved the original 6 series!

Right, the shudder could be down to a warped disc, mis aligned disc, buggered caliper or as already hinted, the bracket

Normally it is disc or caliper

The smell of petrol used to happen on mine, but not so much now

there is a screw (allen screw?) on the AFM which can be fettled with to alter the F/A mixture, take it to a friendly garage and ask them to sort it out though as you could make it a lot worse.

given the fact that you're only getting 200 miles per full tank is worrying and a definite pointed that you're running rather rich.

For example:

I have the 3 litre M30 engine in my 7 series, I use Shell V-Power only and get approximately 300-350 mile per full tank (it is 90 litre and thats running around town constantly when its not being provoked into country lane action!)

Also, check your spark plugs & air filter as these can decrease fuel economy and also add to the stinky smell

How often is the car serviced??

BMW Care (Leeds) will setup the car for around £80-£100 and usually provide a high level of service to boot!!!!!!

Call me Scott

Only thing I can really suggest is take it back when you're not going to need it for a while!

Im fairly sure there are some dedicated websites for the 6 series BM around the net, mayb the bimmerboard have some specialised knowledge they would care to impart?
