"Projection Headlights"

Am having headlamp issues! Have just been told that I have "non-projection" headlights, which means nothing to me! Apparently the projection headlights are far better? Is that the case? has anyone else had the same problems and upgraded? If so, is it easy, where is the best place to get them from and, more importantly, will I notice any difference? The guy that I have been discussing it with has suggested that the reflectors have a tendency to fade and that the lenses may not be "at their best" which would explain it! Am I being
duped?

what car is it? From what I know (someone please correct me if I am wrong) some of the 3 and 5's had the normal bulb and silver reflector setup for the headlights, but some had the lenses or "projection" lights. Laterly the lenses were only used on HID lamps.

I recall one the E39's we had ('97 vintage) had the lenses, but no HID, and the lights were crap. But it would have been fairly easy to upgrage as they had the correct connectors and the auto-level required by law for HID systems.

Thanks for that guys, seems that I may have the "projection" headlamps but not the HID. And yet, lights are "disappointing"!
