I have the above mentioned car, was thinking of either getting it chipped or trading in for a 4.8is.
Does chipping make a big difference to it? and if so what is the difference please?
And could you reccomend what chip to go for?

I owned an 05 3.0d Sport prior to my current 4.8is and chipped the 3.0d from about 1000 miles on the clock.

I fitted a Tunit box and found it a easy to install/remove (for servicing) and worth every penny. Whilst extra bhp does help form a standing start, the car is never going to jump from the lights as it's always hunting for the next gear if you try to! But it did make a big difference once the it was moving. Rather than thinking can I overtake or is there enough space, it gave sufficient extra bhp to make you feel comfortable and go past other cars. The standard engine is pretty good but it benefits from a few extra horses and I could really notice the difference once I had removed the box and drove to the dealers when it was due a service.

Warranty could be a problem which is the reason why I decided to fit a box rather than a DMS remap. Not sure BMW can tell either way and I've read good reports of DMS and other such companies but have no first hand knowledge. MPG didn't suffer either way and I'm very heavy with my right foot so it would be difficult to tell for sure. I did go through a set of front disks in 24k miles although for tyres also lasted for the same time confused

I moved to a 4.8 having sold an 03 996 and the 3.0d because I rarely drove the Porsche and wanted to own/run one suitable grunty car for the family. The 4.8 is a true animal and I drive far too many miles to justify the size of engine and fuel costs (about 35k per annum, but I do own my own company which helps!). People are often amazed as the 4.8 pulls away from lights or when you put your foot down at 60 and 100 appears pretty quickly but to be honest in day to day town or motorway driving it's no different to a chipped 3.0d!

I understand BMW are sticking the 3.0DTT in the new X and I think that will be the perfect combination. I've had one on order for over two years but no news yet of when it may arrive!
