X5 4.8 FUEL CONSUMPTION FIGURES WANTED
Discussion
Hi,I am thinking of trading in my X5 3.0 D sport auto(face lift) in for a 4.8 model, what sort of figures regarding fuel consumption could i expect please?
My diesel gets about 26 average with a mixture of all driving, that is taken as an average over 12 months and about 12000 miles, when i reset the computer.
Town driving is roughly 21 mpg
Towing is roughly 21 mpg
Motorway driving is roughly 32 mpg
I just sold mine and have previously documented on BM3W all the economy figures. My brother also has a 3.0d X5 and we regularly drive down through France on hols, so I know how they compare at the pumps in real life.
I used to 'average' around 18mpg in my 4.8is, driven along a mixture of dual carriageway and fast twisty (i.e. screw the economy) A-roads. Driven on a motorway at 70mph on cruise control I used to achieve between 21 and 23 mpg, I once managed 26.5 mpg along a 60 mile drive through the cambridgeshire fens. The worst I have averaged was 14-16mpg when driven using most of the performance without concern for consumption.
Driven down through France on the autoroutes, averaging 90mph I used to achieve 19mpg, my brother in his 3.0d would be getting just over 27mpg in the same circumstances, so I stopped more regularly than him but not massively so.
The 4.8is is not, I repeat not a gas guzzler, it really depends on how you drive it. Some cars drink regardless of your right foot, but the 4.8is will reward economical driving with fuel figures that I found very comparable to our Mini Cooper S.
I've had mine since June and already added 21k miles to the clock
I have averaged 17.9 since June and can get into early 20's on a run driving below 70mph. I get 360 miles on average from a tank and put super in whenever I can. Beware the range shortens very quickly when you get back into town though! I fill her up at least a couple of times, sometimes more than that a week and am on first name terms with my local BP garage!
Great car and I still enjoy driving it, the noise it makes being a major plus!. The only problem I've had is a really crap gear change from third to fourth which the dealer acknowledges but can do nothing about
I bought a 7 month old ex BMW car with 2700 miles on the clock and paid 20k less than list so there are some bargains to be had.

ooooh i didn't know that they had a 90 litre tank
I could be seeing £100 a week to fill up on the 4.8
Borrowed a mates 4.8 to travel to Edinburgh, it cost £96 to fill the tank, which was a real shock. That and the £85 it cost to get back
Still they do sound very good
Quite obviously driving like a girl to only use that much fuel on such a long journey!
I've been into London today and have just filled up with about £90's worth of normal unleaded. The computer suggests I have about 265 miles on this full tank before that V8 dies....

It runs further on super unleaded..
Btw, make sure the oil level is topped up to maximum - you will find this stated in the handbook - the 4.8is engine only runs well (and efficiently) when the oil level is at its highest.

It may not do but at least all of the parts it's made of are still attached at the end of a journey

My current 530 will do about 350miles on a 70 litre tank.

What kind of driving do you do to get this? I have a 530 Touring and do 90/10 Town/Dual carriageway and once or twice a month on the motorway to give it a blast. And I get between 26-31 mpg which is roughly 400 - 450 miles per tank or when the light comes on. The best I had was 36.4 going up north to newcastle one night.
