So after having it about a month I thought I'd finally get around to posting some pics of this beauty. This is just after having it detailed by Paul at Miracle Detail who used the famous concoction (princess's fanny batter and dodo bollock juice):

Nice. What blue is that? Looks like the same as my new 320d M Sport Touring that's arriving in January.

Nice car, but what's that "thing" below the reg plate?

Thanks Alex. That's the sensor for the adaptive cruise control. It has its quirks but it is definitely the option I'm most impressed with so far.

Sorry for being an ignoramus but...

What does adaptive cruise control do? Sounds cool! Is it like it senses if there's something in front of it?

I remember they (BMW) did something like that with the very late E38 7-Series but I've never actually seen a car fitted with it.

Active Cruise Control (ACC) uses a three-beam radar sensor to monitor the road ahead of the car and to adjust the speed of the vehicle by slowing the engine or by gently applying the brakes.

I'm guessing it's just the same as Mercedes/Jaguar/Land Rover's radar cruise control...

They all do more or less the same thing but there are several different technologies used to do it (radar, lidar, laser, probably some others) - each manufacturer uses their own version and the costs can vary wildly between versions.

The BMW one costs about £600 and I think its one of the cheapest around, some cost several £'000. Then again, the BMW system is slower to react than some of the others and the Mercedes one can judge around slight corners whereas the BMW can only operate on line of sight.

In my opinion this technology will become as popular on new cars in about 3-5 years as sat nav has become. If nothing else, it helps you matain a good distance (...which quite a few drivers could do with help on).

Yep, that's it: Le Mans blue. Looks like I'll be pleased with it. I've gone for black leather, auto-dimming mirrors and xenons. Otherwise the standard kit is pretty comprehensive.
