BIL test drove a used BMW 535D the other day. Was blown away by it and agreed the deal. He went to pick it up today. A journey of about 200 miles round trip.

Having paid for it, it was then presented to him in absolutely filthy condition. They've loaned him a 1 series and will drop his new car off tomorrow after it has had a through valet. Although that could be a waste given the salesman has to drive to 100 miles to him.

Anyone else think this is pi55 poor service when someone is buying a 35K car?

I would have asked the dealer to transfer the car to a closer garage and picked it up my self. It will be filthy by the time it's covered 100 miles and gives you the opportunity to inspect the vehicle to make sure your happy with it. If it's covered in dirt or wet then you'll find it hard to notice any defects. One salesman from my local dealer managed to curb all 4 wheels whilst delivering a new car! I bought a new 318is in 99 and the car was at another dealer 150 miles away, they carried out a dealer swap and transported the car via a trailor. The Walon transporters that deliver the cars to the dealers will pick it up and deliver it.

I found BMW customer service to be consistently dire, even before I bought the car. I should have taken the hint and not had anything more to do with them.

Than actually collecting the car, I couldn't collect it on a Saturday as the Salesman wasn't working. So despite being 4 hours away Friday lunchtime I get a phone call just after arriving home asking to collect the car.

Then on subsequent dealing when it became apparent what a pile of cack the car was, customer service was only interested in fobbing me off with BS, not actually trying to resolve the problems (of which there were many).

As they and their cars are substandard I won't be bothering them to supply me with any further cars.

It depends on the dealer. I've only found two to be consistently worth the effort: Vines of Guildford and Murketts in Huntingdon. BMW dealers in the UK seem to be a very ropey bunch.

I had the misfortune of dealing with Murketts. As you can tell from my post, my experience was somewhat different.

I've never bought a car from them, I just use them for service. They always fix things.

bmw dealer service has been on a decline for several years now. they are all too obsessed with hitting target to score their bonuses and customer service has gone out of the window, get em in rush em out, it's such a shame. 6-7 years ago I would not have been able to fault my local dealer but now, different story. bmw ag are also to blame for stipulating such tuff criteria that the dealers have to adhere to and spend fortunes on for no return.

If you haven't even got MY patience, you must be very impatient indeed.

Well, car was delivered as promised. BIL unhappy with its preparation so is going to give it a full clean tomorrow, inside and out.

Further downsides: Car came with only 1 key and no handbook.

That is shocking. I'd give the dealer principal a right old earful shout

Totally unacceptable. I trust they brought it to your attention and confirmed when they would get the other keys to you........

After 2 months of continual discussions they showed no interest in sorting the multiple problems as all they could manage was plugging it the diagnostics port. As that showed no trace of the problems, they had no idea/interest in fixing it.

I just wanted a car I could trust and wasn't trying to kill/maim me, so had to dump it and get a properly engineered car (I trusted my TVR Tasmin more than the 120d).

I had the same problem with the previous BMW I made the mistake of buying. I asked them to diagnose the dire fuel consumption, they plugged in the diagnostics and couldn't find anything wrong. When I checked the air filter it was blocked with soot. Solving mechanical problems unless told to by the computer doesn't seem to occur to them.

I've had problems with BMW service before and at one point I swore I'd never enter another dealership again. Thankfully, I can name and shame since the two that I had horrible experiences with have now closed (Altwood in Maidenhead were useless and Hughenden in High Wycombe were horrible!).

But when I read about the 335d it sounded like a perfect car for me so I went to take a look at my local dealership (Sytner High Wycombe) and I found the salesman (Nick) and sales manager (Simon) to be a real pleasure to deal with and both had a decent sense of humour during price negotiation (which is now essential when dealing with me smokin).

I don't know what the customer service is gonna be like, but so far its been all good.

I thought Altwood were still going, but with a name change to Stratstone because they were so dire.

BIL has now found the handbook in the car so that is one less thing to owrry about.

I've had a quick drive of it this evening and, boy, does it go. He is going to fire off a letter to the Dealer Principal in the new year.
