Has anyone got any experience of using an agency to sell their car?

I keep getting calls from different agencies claiming to have buyers waiting, at a cost to me of £90 which is refundable once the car is sold.

The sales people are very, very pushy, but is it worth giving it a go?

Absolutely, undoubtledly, NO.

You're not the first person to question it, so don't worry, but without a shadow of a doubt DO NOT DO IT.

Hope that's not too vague hehe

One of these was on Watchdog a few months ago (cardata?) with a generally shocking statement as to the service provided.

DO NOT DO IT. I was ripped off of £90:00 (Although very embarrassed to admit it). They promise you of customers waiting to view your car but nobody materialised. When I phoned and questioned it, they said they had people lined up but it's not their fault they didn't get in touch with me. I then demanded to see a "list" of potential buyers of which they faxed through to me. Only to find a list of names with reference numbers (No telephone numbers though due to data protection blah blah blah). I reported them to trading standards (who were already aware of such companies) but nothing was done. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Col.

This doesn't make sense! Surely if they sold the car they'd want a fee, and if they failed to sell the car they wouldn't deserve a fee. If someone phoned me and said they'd line me up some buyers and I'd have to pay them £90 when they sold my car, I'd say "great, go ahead". But if someone said I could pay them £90 to find a buyer and then I would get my money back when the car sold I'd be deeply suspicious as they'd simply be offering to look after £90 while they tried to sell my car... and if selling it meant they had to give my £90 back then there'd be no incentive for them to sell it!!

When I put my RX8 for sale in the trader I received so many phonecalls from these clowns.

I did ask them why, if they had buyers waiting, why they didn't secure the deal then I would pay my fee

Offer to pay on completion of a sale to one of their buyers. They'll not be too keen.

Their lists are usually just other sellers that the company makes assumptions about what car they might be looking for.
