I just noticed (a year later boxedin) that on the back of the mirror near the windscreen there is a photocell. Now I presume that this is for the auto light on feature? If so how on earth do I activate it as I cannot find it in the manual?

If you have automatic headlights, you just need to turn the headlight switch to the left from its off position and you will have this feature activated.

Thanks thumbup But the control will not go to the left, so I presume that I do not have this feature even though the sensor is there.

The photo cell is to dim/brighten the instrument cluster lighting.
When dark the orange is softer and in day light it is brighter and to also change the electrochromatis mirrors(if you have them).
There is a second cell on the dash to measure the cabin light aswell
I dont think auto lights came out til around E46-2000 ish may be a bit before.

It is for sensing night time and affects the sensitivity of the electrochromatic mirrors.
Cover it up at the front and shine a torch at the smaller sensor on the rear view mirror facing you and the mirror will dim.
It stops you being dazzled at night by following cars.
