Is it normal for the gear lever to get hot on long trips?

and what is the average fuel consumption on a 328

How hot? My gear lever gets up to around 35°C to 40°C.

Fuel consumption is between 31 to 33 mpg with a mixture of spirited and grandad style driving.

24 about town (and with a heavy right foot) and about 30/34 on the motorway.

10 if you track it hehe

You shouldn't get any discernable heat through the gearlever - I didn't on Monday and I was going round and round and round and round all day at the Colerne Trackday.

Although it did get a bit tappety at the end - but it's fine now

By the way BMW gurus - whats the butterfly valve for on the 328 left exhaust tip - is it a Aston Martin stylee noise loudness thingy?

Edited add: Answered my own question with a bit of googling - apparently activated by a vacuum hose, it opens at about 2000-2500rpm and makes the exhaust go from one exhaust pipe to two pipes - thus making it less restrictive.

By all accounts this can be held open by taking the hose off and wedgeing the vacuum open with a golf tee - thus making the exhaust louder at the cost of a bit of torque.

I have absolutely no idea why you would want to do that though...

It's for better emissions control when cold.

So how does it work - does it stay open when cold or something? It was closed when hot and idleing on Monday...

Don't know about the gearlever... the lever on my e36 318is has never been noticably warm though the plastic trim under the armrest is noticably warm sometimes.

240ish miles from a full tank around town, 360ish when mainly motorway...

No idea what that equates to in MPG
