Dunno if it will do 400,000 but I'm fascinated to know if your E39 has done 400,000 on original engine/box?

Since the new shape 5 series have only been on sale
for two or three years I doubt anyone is in a position to
find out.

Do you mean km or miles ?

Time will tell. Ask me again in three years.

400k out of a BMW? Well any car is capable of doing that with regular maintenance and care. Have to question the idea of running a twin turbo diesel for that many miles, but if you are happy to cover the servicing and maintenance there is no reason that it wont. There is "some" evidence to suggest that the turbos on the 530d last about 100k+ miles before a rebuild / replacement. Though this is by no means a guide or recommendation - some do, some dont..... depends on a number of circumstances.

Will a twin turbo model last as long? Dont know - time will tell. However, do note that the current E60 model isnt the most reliable BMW and due to the complexity of it (electronics) some people are saying that they are not as good as the E39.

However, my particular take on this is that a regularly used car will last MUCH longer than one that is not. A car which is used day-in-day-out with a decent warm up and cool down should last a good period of time. Though what happens to the electronics in the meantime is anyones guess....

I wonder what you would get for a 535d with that much miles on it though - £2000?

Wow - great to hear that mileage... My E39 2.0 is on 163,000 miles and feels brand new to drive... They are one fantastically built car!

Care to tell us why ?

I thought the whole idea of going the diesel route was to clock up "starship" mileage to make it a worthwhile purchase (bearing in mind the increased cost of the diesel over a petrol engined variant when new) confused
