Right, not knowing the nuts and bolts of these babies, I might be looking at one for the missus at the weekend. Car looks straight with history, I'm pretty sure that it wont go bang in the next half hour, but realistically, are there any drawbacks in this kind of mileage at this age (2000 on a V) from a 323, or am I just being silly and its only just worn in?

The M54 is a fairly safe bet,good strong engine,even around 200k.
We get very little problems with these-normally electrical(lambda etc),gearbox is the same.

I can't comment on the 323, but a colleague at work has an 2000/X 320CI with nearly 150,000 miles on it. It's still going strong, just uses a bit more oil these days.

Is it a silver one ?
100k should be no problem if its been properly maintained.

I don't know it or the owner directly but he's a member on bmwcarmagzine.com and I'm sure used to be on Club GTi years back. Posts sense and the car looks pretty decent.

I'm shocked at how much E46 you can get for <£10k these days.
