My 2001 330ci is now struggling to get past the first marker past the blue on the temp gauge. Shouldn't the needle be pointing at 12 o clock after a few minutes? It's also started drinking oil at the rate of 1 litre/1000 miles. Related?
Thermostat is a common fault and would be the first thing I'd check.
The M54 also has a tendancy to use oil, so I'd just have a good look around to see if there are anyobvious leaks and if not just keep an eye on the consumption.
