Well, after months of consuming nearly every free evening and weekend I've finished my E28 528i SE...well nearly!

I've still got to fit the new shocks and springs all round, get the original metric wheels refurbished for show purposes only (the pics show the car on non-metric 16" rims with new Continentals...far better for actually driving the car), get some new underbonnet stickers and a fresh MOT...but that's basically it!

So I've uploaded a couple of slideshows to my website for anyone who's interested in these cars to have a butchers. One is of the car 'finished' taken today; the other is a selection of snaps I took along the way (pics not yet captioned) of work, parts etc etc

They can be accessed here:

Simply Awesome!

Looks like we just stepped back in time to when it was new!

You just need to find an E28 M5 to prepare to the same standard now hehe

Cheers Mustard!

I re-fitted a period Blaupunkt radio/cassette during the process...slipped in a Style Council cassette...and it WAS like sitting there back in 1986! driving

M5?...Would be nice...but my next 'project' HAS GOT (!!!!!) to be to get round to doing my E30 M3 to get it ready for sale...I've sworn an oath: "No new acquisitions until that's done!"

...so don't go tempting me!

Me? Tempt you? nono hehe

If this was a 528i (or bigger!) think you'd have just tempted me!

Here

Strange 525e Lux.
My father had a new one of those back in the late 80s.
They were great - actually a 2.7 engine with extra torque.
the car confuses me - I could swear that the 525e lux was only avail in certain colours (ie not bronze) and had the spoked alloys. It was a run out model.

You dont want to do an E30 M3

You want to do a 1991 E34 525 yes

Seriously though, that is amazing. Full credit due, and you can be rightly proud of that E28

You could probably sell that to a BMW main dealer to leave in thier showroom.

My fave pic is this one

Cheers Turbo!

A few jobs left to do on the E28.

An E34 might be a possibility in the future (just not my wife's one! She and the kids have ensured that that car is beyond me and really as far as I'm concerned has 'utility' value only ) as they're so well built and parts are plentiful BUT...

I absolutely MUST MUST MUST get my E30 M3 done over the winter for sale in the Spring! It doesn't need much doing and most of it I can't do myself anyway...and I've already got mosyt of the parts stored away ready to do it...so it should be easy!

Then, once the decks are cleared, I'll take stock and look for something else to keep me occupied.

Those aren't the only ones I've had...just the ones that I have photos of from more recent times. In fact, my very first car ever was a 2002tii...back in the days when they'd not long stopped being a current model.

I've never owned what would be considered a current model but I think just about the only mainstream models I've not had from as far back as the 1970's right up to the late 90's is an E24 6-Series (actually haven't had a Z car of any description either). I always wanted a 6-er when I was younger; then when I could just about afford one they went through an image crisis; when that started wearing off the prospect of ending up with a money pit because of rust put me off... Maybe I'll rectify that missing link sometime?

You should have a go at your E34 525i...it should be a relatively easy car to work with/on?

Cheers

Hi Barry

Yes! Very much still got the 840Ci Sport! Added about a whole 60 miles to the total mileage since we last spoke! I'm not selling it! Did consider selling and getting a Ferrari 348 instead...went and saw one up close here in our village. Had the two cars standing next to each other...the E31 made the 348 look like a joke in comparison! Also Nigel Moseley at Moseley Motorsport used to actually own a 348. I asked him what he thought of them...his words are not repeatable here! But somewhere the words "pile of..." were mentioned!

Anyway, hope yours is ok? Possibly you haven't driven yours much lately either?

Here's mine...didn't do a full write up on the car as there's no point as I'm not selling:

www.bmwclassics.co.uk/840cisport01/index.html

NB text should read 286 PS not 210!...I think maybe that's 210 KW or whatever the other units are?

Looking good Derin. I'm due back in the UK next weekend for a month or so. Will collect the car from storage near Heathrow ( actually, they collect & deliver on a covered trailer). Got a business meeting in Paris, mid Dec. so will probably drive and stock up with my festive bottle booty on the way back driving

That is lovely and almost identical to my old 528 SE apart from:

1 optional twin black coachlines along the upper flanks

2 slightly earler version with the metal front valance & integrated 1" deep chin spiler.

The non metric wheels look nice too.

I was always on the lookout for a nice E28 535i SE manual but they are rare (prefer the understated no bodykit look).

Derin that E28 looks absolutely immaculate. Stunning mate.

Selling the E30 M3.....Stop think......Don't do it mate.... you know in years to come you'll regret it.

HEMIBUM: Did you realise (because I didn't until recently!) that the back seats in the E31 fold flat! Thus increasing the already large boot space into a car with huge 'vin rouge' carrying capacity! beer

ROMAN: Thanks! Ironically, I actually have an original twin black stripe stored away from a time when I previously had a white M535i. I had that car resprayed and then counldn't decide whether I preferred it with the strips or not...so I left them off. The stripes that I have will come with the current car when I sell it...and the new owner can decide whether he or she prefers it with or without. I think en-balance I prefer it without?

GARY: Where the hell have you been all these years!!! I know I'll regret selling the E30 M3 in time...but I can't keep'em all! I'll regret it in the same way as I regretted my E9 3.0CS that I personally owned for 13 years and recently saw sold by a subsequent owner here on PH just a few weeks ago!...I was almost tempted to buy it back! I know once the E30 M3 is gone...that's it...I'll never get another...but there ya go! Assuming you still have your EVO Sport?

Yes I do think it looks nice & clean without.

Mine was a manual and had the slightly larger rear boot spoiler. I'd buy another if I had enough storage & time to excercise it.

I also have the metric wheels which I still need to send of for reburbishing (for 'show'). However, apart from being hugely expensive (thankfully the ones I have a nearly new) the metric tyres aren't actually too clever...especially in the wet IIRC. With the new 16" continentals it should drive much nicer too.

You're right though...space and not being able to drive them all is my problem too!

Derin, lovely picture of the e28. I must admit to visiting your site quite regularly and i notice on there that you undertook the restoration of a e28 M535i....one of my all time fave's (along with the e12 M535i and e24 Highline but, i've been down the `Big Six` route already) Don't suppose you've got some pictures of that to show us also.

Cheers,

M3J.
