Hi,

I'm not normally a contributor to the BMW lists, as I'm normally on the Noble list. however.....

I'm currently building a race car, and I've decided to use a straight six BMW engine.

However, there is a chap who is also using a straight six engine, but I can't tell which one it is....

Here is the pic.

I know it's not easy to see the engine, but I'm sure somebody will be able to give me an idea at least !

And here is a picture of my race car, engine installed.

I would say that is a 328i six from a E36 model bm. It could also be a 325i or 323i of a simiar vintage (96-99)

All of them have ample power for that style of car!!

No the 328 is a 2.8 (193bhp), the 323 (c.170bhp) and 325 (c.190bhp) are both 2.5's. I think the 328 runs vanos, but the 330 definately does.

All straight six engines....

If the oil filler cap is on the left side of the engine its an M50 engine, if its got Vanos (varoable valve timing) its an M50tu (not sure were the oild filler cap was on the m50tu)
could be a 2.0 2.5 or 2.8
Post 95 engine the oil filler cap was moved to the other side of engine (near the timming chain) and the engine became known as the M52 with single variable valbe timing.
Later engines with twin vanos were known as the M52tu

Many thanks for the help chaps.

The above car is currently racing in a FIA balkan series and is only 1/2 second slower than the GT3 spec 911 it's racing against.

Given I'm going to be fitting the 3.2 M3 EVO engine to mine, I'm hoping it'll be even faster.

I'll see if I can find some more pictures of the engine, and hopefully find the tell tail fillter cap.

Cheers
