Oh I don't know, left alone I think the Coupe is much prettier - however its the image that gets up peoples nose.
If an M3 is standard, then those who are "in the know" and actually worth reacting a response from will see through the slightly "90's" bodykit (which actually does make a difference so therefore quite cool) and appreciate the car for what it is:
A super quick yet reasonably sensible car
I had me and 3 passengers in mine all weekend, and they were all enjoying the comfort and thrust - there was no "I ain't getting in that chav wagon..."
Just my tuppence worth
I've had an Evo Saloon, with boot spoiler, since April. My family refer to it as "the Chav car" and look embarrassed when they go in it! But petrolheads tend to respect them for the engineering, and the value for money - not much to touch them at the price for the spec and build quality. So it depends who you're talking to...
Changing it for an 840 Ci later this week - chest wig on order!

Thay do suffer from a bit of an image problem, granted. But for the money they are going for, they are one second-hand performance bargains of the moment.
I reckon the key is to get one as standard as possible. Then the Chav factor diminishes quite considerably. There are some terrible mods out there and a lot of cars have them.
I loved mine even if it was in Dakar Yellow!
Personally, I can't wait for E46s to properly fall into the chav price bracket (It's starting to happen). This will hasten their depreciation and make for an even more amazing second-hand buy!

Buy a manual and make sure you have enough cash in the bank to pay for a new Double Vanos. When you find an M3 ask if the Double Vanos has been changed. They rarely go wrong before 40K miles so you can estimate how long before problems might occur by ascertaining the mileage at which is was last replaced. Also, I believe they are warranted for two years. If it doesn't have a recent Double Vanos haggle more fiercely over the price. Many don't go wrong but you need to be safe. For more M3 advice than I can give you go to www.e36coupe.com and register on the forum.
As for being chavvy... I have no experience of M3s being regarded as such but then I'm from 'up norf' where running water and electricity are still a novelty, so perhaps it's just a view that relativley evolved southerners hold. Either way, it's your car. Sod what anyone else thinks... It's how it makes you feel that matters.

I'll put your mind at rest mate, have a look at mine on my profile...thats what a good one should look like !
It looks well. I'm still not sure though, I'm going to a look at a few close up over the next few weekends.
Take a look at mine in my profile, not an M3, but a 328i Sport with the same bodykit as M3Johns (which was factory standard for the Sports before anyone pipes up).
Same thing, in Black, but with different wheels.
I can see the point in terms of the 'chavness' but i prefer to think of it as 'business-like' in the way it looks, as you just know that it's been designed for function NOT style. The boot spoiler could be considered rather big, but then perhaps it needs it? Aerodynamic efficiency moves on, hence no need for spoilers now - or at least just a tiny boot lip spoiler.
If a car is standard, then you can buy without fear of those in the know pointing and laughing. everyone else if you enjoy driving it.

Good description there mate as `business-like`. I am very fond of the 328i Sport like yours...and a very fine example it is.
As for the the aerodyanmic body kit, trust me it is DEFINATLY there for a reason and not just looks

I'd rather try it in yours, looking at the state of the Coupes tyres after the last outing
