Did you mean the 2002 BMW from the late sixties/early 70s? (like the tii and Turbo)

Just was at croft last week and was speaking to one of the instructors from the local owners club and he said that he done rallies and events in his and said that his friend was selling a 1502 which had decent bodywork but the engine wasnt to good just thinking about it at the minute but finding as much about it as possible any information will be helpful

My Girlfriend loves them.

They have a four cylinder engine which is of a similar design to that used in the 3 series E30 up until 1987 (1.5 litres all the way up to 2 litres and from 75 Bhp all the way up to 170 Bhp for the Turbo).
The "tii" is my favourite which produces 130 Bhp from a 2 litre.
The M30 engine six cylinder 2.8 up to 3.5 litre also used in alot of BMWs until the early 1990s can be considered a 6 cylinder version of this 4 pot motor. The engines have a high specific output.
They were styled by Michelotti, just like the period Triumphs were. I personally think they're ugly, but I know ALOT of folks who absoutely adore them.
Under the skin the 2002s are very conventional cars, with Mac Pherson Struts at the front and semi trailing arms are the rear.
Watch for rust rust and more rust if you're looking for one.
Their isn't alot more to add, they're mechanically much more straight forward than say, a period Alfa Romeo and much better built.
You can also fit a 1980s E30 "S14" M3 2.3 litre engine in with relative ease because they share the same block.

I have a 2002 touring built to ti spec with twin solex, Dynoed at 153 bhp and a real gem. Also full restoration 6 years ago and still looks great. If interested let me know.

My very first car back in 1982 was a 2002tii...and I had several subsequent versions the last being owned by my wife...the white one on my website (sorry on a small thumbnail on the extreme left of this page: www.bmwclassics.co.uk/about/index.html )

As said, bear in mind even the youngest eg. 1502 which was an 'economy run-out' model will now be 30 years old! Absolutely wonderful cars! part of what lifted BMW out of a crisis. But beware of rust...and then...rust...then check for rust. I don't mean silly superficial corrosion and mean proper good old-fashioned rust!

Fitting any other engine nowadays is a pointless and money consuming exercise from which you will not see a financial return.

Much as my wife and I both love these cars...we sold our last one 5 years ago...and I doubt I'd ever have another...which I could but I just don't think I could afford one!

Not really what i wanted to hear as i was thinking bout selling my 328 sport and buying one of those and with the excaess money start to build a kit car but if there expensive to run i might have to change my plan

They're not expensive to run, it all depends on definition of expensive.
I drive an E21 323i as a daily car, which hasn't been expensive, but I do all the maintainance myself.
You just have to know what you're doing and keep on top of things. Before I came to Germany, I changed the cam belts, changed and tensioned the PAS, Alternator and fan belt, flushed the cooling system did the valve clearances and changed the rear sub frame bushes. Becuase Ive owned the car so long I knew EXACTLY what needed to be done to it. It's been cheap because it's all my own labour. If you have the skills to build a kit car then you certainly have the skills to look after a 2002. You just can't forget about the car like you can with your 328i.
The parts prices for older BMWs are cheap and quite often cheaper than equivalent era Fords.
The only thing I would look into is knowing how to set up the complex fuel injection system of the 2002 tii, should you get this model.

As Rex said...that's what I meant really...you've got to stay on top of things and you can't just sort of forget about it like you can with a more modern BMW.

What I also meant to say was by 'expensive' was that I'd only really be interested in an absolutely superb example...which in itself would cost a fair amount these days. Then I what to keep in superb condition which could be difficult if I was having to run it as my only car. All in all the 328i would be a much easier option.

But the are nice...

Just thinking...wouldn't an E30 or an E34 work as an option for you instead alongs the lines that you described at the beginning of the thread? You can by a nice decent one quite cheaply, parts are cheap and plentiful secondhand, less rust prone etc etc....?
