Right, I've seen a 535d AM Sport Saloon I'm interested in. Spec is as follows:

carbon black with black dakota leather
55 plate
20,500 miles
auto-dimming & folding exterior mirrors
electric front seats & driver memory
electric glass sunroof
floor mats (woo-hoo)
front seat heating
head-up display
hifi loudspeaker system
high gloss shadow line
M spoke 19" wheels
media package
through loading system including ski bag
visibility package

Spec is good apart from the fact that it has 'Dark Poplar Wood - High Gloss', and I want 'Maple Wood - High Gloss'.

Sales guy has told me that the wood can be changed but I'll be looking at around £600 for doing it.

Its up for £36k

So, my question is, what should I be paying for it ? What kind of discounts are available on used BMW's (never had one before) ?

£32k tops. There is a facelift in March. Still depreciate at £6k a yr for the next 2yrs imo.

£34k still represents a great, great buy.

Looked again this weekend & seen another couple of cars with similar spec.

First one was black, 06 plate, 26k miles, up for £34995
Second was silver, 55 plate, 7k miles, up for £36500

Was more interested in what kind of percentage discount people had managed to get on a used BMW.

It completely depends on what they paid for it. The margins are being squeezed tighter and tighter these days and its very easy to compare prices on the web.

I would aim for a minimum of £1000 so start higher than that and see where you get.

Bear in mind you can get near on 15% off a new car at the moment so if it is on finance I would get a quote to compare. The residuals are pretty good on the 5 diesels.

I wouldn't call a 28% drop in price after 12 months very good. And thats the dealer price. The poor guy that sold it can't have got more than 30k so its nearer a 37% drop.

Think I'll stick to buying a year old one & let others take the big hit for me.

yes

The only ones I've seen at this price have had no sat nav.

you can get 11-12% off but not 15%, unless you are talking run out X5

Make them a low opening offer and work up from there! I think timing (Christmas bonuses in dealers) might work to your advantage. It also looks like there's a massive choice of 535d's available from £32k to £35k.

Have you (both) test driven one yet?

You can get a brand new one for £34.5K from drivethedeal.com supplied by a UK BMW dealer so a year old one must be worth no more than £30K

Just put mine up on Pistonheads if you'd like to have a look (has poplar instead of maple) but a very very high spec and great condition car (still like new):
