My 2000 X plate 330d did a very similar thing when I had it a few years ago. Turned out that the plastic inlet manifold had cracked. It basically smoked alot and became non-turbocharged. Mine was replaced under warranty and was about 300 quid from memory.

Hope it's a simple fix.

Cheers
Matt

took the car to the garage this morning they tested engine mangement and diaognostics everything ok, well a few small problems but nothing major. So thought it would be ok 50 miles away massive cloud of smoke greyish/blue, loud tapping noise from engine bay and i noticed the revs increased without using the accelerator. AA called he said the turbo has gone but i can,t see how it would of blown yesterday and again today or can they do that ? any help would be appreciated thanks

If it had a turbo recently then you will probabely find the fault is the Crankcase breather/oil separater on the cam cover housing-they have recently been modified.
The old breathers had a nice sponge in them which is helpful-the new ones dont.If the sponge clogs up with oil the engine/crankcase cant breath. Will case various faults-loss of power/harsh engine noise/blue/white smoke. This will not normally log a fault code
Most techs tend to miss or forget this one.
If they have changed it and have cleaned all of the inlet side then 2 possibilities-
Have the cat checked-if oil from the turbo has gone straight to the exhaust it will clog the cat-cat over heats and cracks.
The second is more serious-assuming all is ok you must have the INLET MANIFOLD SWIRL FLAPS checked-the spindles that hold the swirl flap on fail,a piece of the spindle goes in and makes a mess-a common noise with the engine running is a chuffing noise from the manifold area.
hope that helps (ps the the last fault is rare)

Hi Thanks for all your replies the lastest development is as follows; when the car was in the garage they found that there was 13.5litres of oil/disel in the sump, (not good) thoughts are now that the high pressure pump seals have gone, then I find out that a previous owner had put petrol in, got it flushed out but never changed any parts. Now it seems the bearings are going and/or the turbo is nakered. Massive bill looks like a 2nd hand engine if the price is right, anything else to go wrong?
