Wind screen Washers
Discussion
I sent my 05 330i to the dealer to have the washer wipe system fixed (I thought under warranty) and they told me the filter was blocked and I had to pay. 'Wrong sort of screen wash!!!!) Not covered under warranty as there was no faulty part. I argued and lost with BMW, but accepted it. A month down the line the bl**dy thing has stopped working again and I have not filled it since the dealer did. Wrong kind of screen wash; ho ho! Anyone else had this trouble??

I've been wondering about this. i read somewher about someone's headlamp washer jets getting blocked by cheap screenwash. I have been wondering about this as I use the cheap stuff i get at the services, halfraouds, wilkonsons etc.
I have only had the car 6 months but I do slot of miles and use ALLOT of scrrenwash-no problems so far...
I have noticed a slight residue of the stuff-much liek limescale on your taps-around the filler cap and wondered if the same thing is happeining on the jets/pipes...

The dealer said that I should use BMW approved screenwash, to which of course I replied don't be daft. Nothing mentioned in the warranty nor the operating manual. I am also definitley not filling with pond water; in fact with the pre mix stuff from halfrauds. Can't figure out why the filter would get blocked after one tankful. Do you reckon the screen wash is melting the plastic...!!!

Brian, I am also filling with pre-mix Halfords screen wash, I had to do this because the car (E90 3 Series) was supplied to me minus about 4 litres of screen wash.
The car has had Halfords pink stuff in it for about 3 weeks and I don't appear to have a problem so far.

freaky, i'm getting this problem now too (on my e39)! Although it hasn't stopped working, it's just not coming out with as much force. I tried to clean out the main tank by sticking a high pressure hose in there and turing it on. Nothing happened it's still dribbles out, but the undiluted tank of screen wash it ok. So it can't be the nozzles.
Might not be applicable to ready-mixed stuff but....
If you live in a hard water area, then the water you mix the wash with will have a lot of lime in it, and the the evaparation of residual wash at the nozzles will eventually block them with limescale. Take them off and rinse with vinegar. (bit of a hassle under the insulation, and with the heater wires etc) Which is why you will just get replacements fitted by the dealer.

We see this absolutely loads across the range-the water for some reason turns to a jelly and blocks the filter at the pump-I believe its because the water under the filter is never moved-theres about an inch which the pump cant reach-it goes stagnent-its nothing to do with the wash
Maybe its got to with lack of use? I use alot of screenwash because I do big miles and I am obsessive about having a clean screen and use the screenwash plenty. I top up my washer bottle every week or so and have never had a problem in any of my cars. I alsa use higher than reccomended percentage of screenwash to water.
Had this for years with my 330Ci... Every so often the jets block, I think it is because they are heated and causing the nozzle to chalk up. A pin soon sorts it out... I have had BMW try to convince me many a time its something far more complicated than a blocked jet and that it will cost around £25-30, every time my old faithful pin excels...
