E36 fuel guage

My 328i saloon fuel guage has stopped reading full after I have filled the tank.
I have done the trick to test the guages and the fuel one does the full zero to full swing.
After filling up and topping up a day later it still only shows 3/4 full ( 1st thought was air lock or bad fuel station pump )
Any ideas?
