I have an interim car from my company as my new 320d was crashed a while ago and have been given a 53plate e46 318i es. As you can imagine its bloody basic but its only done 50,000 miles and is falling to bits! The windows rattle like hell when they are closed, the gear lever is ridiculously(sp?) stiff and the door hinges barely hold the door open. Anyone else found this problem or is it a one off?

Hmmm, weird. Car must've lead a bl**dy hard life - in fact, it's early E46s I'd avoid, from about 2000/2001 onwards they were pretty much sorted AFAIK.

It can be a lottery.

I've seen, and had, E46's that have been bomb proof, but also know of horror stories of build and reliability. An old work collegue had one that they gave up trying to work out what was wrong, and returned it to the factory ..... he got a replacement car.

I've got a 04/54 plate 320d ES Touring which also seems to have developed rattles coning from both front door window frames. It has only done about 18k miles and has had a fairly easy life.

I also have a 630 which appears to be bullet proof and have owned 5 or 6 other 3 series models which neve gave me a problem.

This is worrying.

Indeed. Some might say, a cheesy choice.
