It looks like I might have to change my current car for something with more seats to carry my 2 (young)children.

I've been looking at the 645Ci as these seem fit the bill for what I need - anyone got any good advice what to look for, any re- occuring problems and what kind of MPG to expect (spend most of my life on the motorway) - Any info greatly appreciated

Matt

I have owned an 05 (Aug) 645 Ci Convertible from new.

The car followed two M3's, both a Coupe (manual) and a Cab (SMGII).

In direct response to the questions you asked I'd say that firstly it depends on just how young your kids are. The space in the 645 rear is worse than in M3's. Much worse. I have a 4 year old daughter who sits on a car seat in the back that elevates her legs - and she moans about the space! For adults, forget it. For teenagers (I have a 15 year old daughter too) forget it as well. Its just not a pratical car if you've got kids of 10 years old or more in my opinion.

In terms of MPG, well I've done 10,000 miles in mine now. Those are VERY enthusiastic miles. The car is pushed. I've averaged 21mpg in that time. Nearly all of those miles (8,000) are leisure miles - blasts on country roads, car meets and runs etc etc - its purely a weekend car and it has been superb.

In terms of the car itself it has been faultless and suffice to say it has outlasted my M3's in terms of the length of ownership. Some people will tell you the run flats ride hard - but it depends what you're used to. Personally, the car gives an immeasurably better ride than my M3 Cab did and just as good as the M3 Coupe did - if not better.

Its a car that can waft in silence one minute or open up the pipes the next and sounds extremely nice indeed - so you have a Jekyll & Hyde capability if you need it. The convertible version is an almost peerless conversion - certainly the best of any car I have ever owned.

If you need any more info, just let me know.

My advice is take one for a long test drive, over a weekend if you can.

I was hugely disappointed with the one I drove. The ride was really awful, the handling anodyne, the performance merely average.
The interior just nor special enough and to say the looks are 'challenging' is as kind as I can be.

I did however find the rear seats OK compared to other coupes.

BMW were doing an extended test drive program not too long ago. If you called customer service they would qualify you and deliver a pool car for you to pick up at the local dealer. Give them a call and see if that is still the case.

It will be a 650i but the differences arent huge (apart from 400cc).

Not at all, each to their own.

I have a 630 Sport so cannot comment on the performance or thirst of the 645. What i can say is that I have today come back from a holiday with my two girls, aged 14 and 12. They had more than enough room in the back and found the 300 mile trip very comfortable.
