Does anyone run one of these gorgeous cars? What problems do you experience - if any?
I can't even drive yet but I'm tempted to buy one (or an E30) - I just love it.
I've seen a couple advertised around the 6/7 grand mark - that seems cheap - I assumed they would be well into five figures (this is for a 3.0 CS).

The E9 coupe is indeed one of THE most gorgeous cars, ever. IMHO
There is a member on here called MRLOVELL (or similar, I believe). He has a stunning CSL and is a club member etc.
However, you'll need very, very deep pockets to own one, even the seat belts rust, or so I'm lead to believe

I own a 3.0 CSL which was restored over about 5 years - mechanically they are not too expensive to run relative to other bmw's - the engine is very robust. The most important thing is the condidtion of the bodywork - they rust just about everywhere and the replacement partd are not only hard to get but extremely expensive if you want originals. I seem to remember that I paid £1200 to get hold of two original thickness aluminium front wings from the factory in germany!
Silly things like a cracked front screen or corroded brightwork can lead to much larger bills than you would expect.
Having said all this the car is fantastic to drive and turns more heads than you would every have thought a 1970's bmw ever would!
It is worth paying extra for one that has been professionally restored than buying a cheap one with ongoing issues as it is a viscous circle of financial pain in my opinion.

Cheers - the e28 will be at the bmw show at donington this weekend (if you are going?) assuming I have got it back from its inspection 2! otherwise will be in the CSL
Will try and sort some photos - believe it or not the whole restoration was photographed but not ona digital camera!!

Rust is the thing to look for, and bear in mind that a CS costs the same to restore as a CSL! The mechanics are the same as the early 5 series and lots of parts can be swapped out for later ones - E28 M5 engine can be fitted or an M535i one.
They've got built in rust traps under the front wings and there are lots of bodged cars out there.
Having said that, the CSL is the only car I have owned that could stop traffic as it's so good looking. I'd have another one tomorrow if prices hadn't finally started rising.

I'll be avoiding the BMW show like the plague, lest I end up buying an E9 or M5!
By the way, was your E28 in Total BMW a few years back?
Nothing wrong with the odd impulse purchase!
Somebody else mentioned that they had seen the car in Total BMW but I have not managed to find out for sure. I have owned the car for two years and have known the car for another 8 before that (guy wouldn't sell it!) I will ask the previous owner...!

I'll see if I can dig it out, have some back issues somewhere....
"Nothing wrong with the odd impulse purchase"...true!
It's when you keep, repeatedly, doing it like me (and others here!) that it becomes a real problem!
I've just bought yet another BMW just over a week ago! Bringing me back up to six BMWs. I was supposed to be focusing on getting my E30 M3 ready for sale...when I got... distracted!
Lovely, totally unmolested E28 528i SE!
Well, it is in this season's colour (Alpine White)...so how could I resist it!?
Now I'm lavishing my attentions on the E28 instead of the M3...Will post some pics soon. Unfortunately, can't make Donnington (wife's birthday) but my friend Donnie will be stopping by with his 'other' E28 (535iSE in Diamond Black De-Chrome). Some of you may know or have seen his Red Alpina 2.8 at Gaydon or recently in Total BMW? Anyone interested in E28's should try and meet up with him Donnington and have a chat.

I was thinking of buying one and running it regularly, except rust is far worse an issue on these models than other BMWs of the era such as the 2002 tii.
Partly because they were constructed at Karmann, much like the early (pre 635 Csi) 630 and 633Csis, which wasn't then known for it's quality construction work

It wasn't so much the quality of Karmann's work that was the problem it was the fact that the Karmann factory in Osnabruck had no rust-proofing bath facility to dip the bodies in.
'Undipped' bodies were then transported to Munich for final assembly by BMW.
If I recall correctly final, very late examples were entirely Munich built.
As others have said rust (by that I mean proper structural rust...these cars wrote the book on it!) is the major issue.
I remember back in about 1982 going to a breakers-yard to get some parts for my 2002tii (my very first car!) and seeing three genuine CSL's stacked one on top of the other being broken because of what was then considered "...rust beyond economical repair..." Think! 1982...they couldn't have even been that old!

So, if anyone out there wants to swap an E9 for a Jaguar XJC www.pistonheads.com/sales/105375.htm send me an email
