Similar to another thread but a bit more complex!

In the market for another E36 and have always wanted an M3 or 328i convertible. I have up to £10k at the moment and it looks like I can get a mint, loaded post-Nikasil '99 328i Convertible and save a few quid on insurance etc. or go for an M3. If I go for the M3 it could be a coupe of convertible (there are lots of M3 convertibles for sale at the mo) but older and I'm worried this could cost me over the next couple of years. I've driven the 328i and thought it was very good (noticably quicker than my 323i), but haven't driven the M3 yet.
My ultimate aim is to get an E46 M3 about six months after the E90 M3 comes out, this is more likely if I don't have to shell out big bills (either maint or repairs) in between now and then. Do I 'gamble' on the M3 now or bide my time???

I think you will be disappointed if you think that the E46 prices are going to plumit when the new M3 comes out. Can't see it happening to be honest.

Whichever car you decide to go for, service history and condition are of far more important than age, and to an extent mileage.

With £10k to spend you should be able to get a near perfect M3 Evo Coupe or Cab (inc hard top). Why would the 328 even feature on your shopping list?

If you buy the right car, and try to get a warrenty for peace of mind, your running costs shouldn't be horrendous.

The only reason I am selling mine is that the fuel is costing me too much, but I'm planning to get a small diesel for my 500 mile a week commute. An M3 will not use significantly more - however the noise of it Evo or 3.0 will encourage you to use a bit more right foot than normal!
