if i am to take this M5/XJR thing seriously, i need to find an E39 M5, pref with a good warranty, A 1999 or 2000 model with 80K or so on.

Problem is the ones i come across are well.. shitters.

So if anybody comes across one, can they let me know

Correct. I suspect the xjr you were looking at was a Jaguar company car as the reg is only a couple of digits off mine. Nothing wrong with the BM (I have owned a few) but the Jag is more refined.

Not sure of your budget but there is a good one for sale in the classifieds - Grey, £16k
The owner is a mod on bmwcarmagazine.com
He knows his stuff and made sure BMW sorted any minor niggle.
It has also had a new warranty

I have 14K max, which is kinda the problem.
