My 1989 535i SE has died on me, Help!

I was driving along happily when it just cut out, no warning just stopped. Called the AA out who pointed out the fuel pump wasn’t priming; they also tested & found there was no spark & the injectors weren’t pulsing. Checked all the fuses in the box – ok. Checked for 12v at the coil – ok & even found 5v at one of the air flow meter connectors, they called their technical help who could only think it was part of the Cat 1 immobiliser, I managed to bypass it but still no joy. At this point I started to worry about the £30 performance chip I got off ebay so swapped it out for the original in case it had faulted some how, but still nothing. So I got a tow to a near by engine management guy/ rolling road so he could connect up his diagnostic gear, he tried all three of his different systems but couldn’t accesses anything in the car, he said it seemed like the whole system wasn’t getting any power (but in retrospect I’m thinking there must be for there to be 5v at the air flow meter as I guess that 5v comes from the ECU?) I told him about swapping the chips, but he didn’t think it would matter but got me to swap back to the performance one, but still nothing. All he could do would be to get an auto electrician to come & have a look the next day, I declined the offer as I was 200 miles from home & had to be in work the next day.
The AA saved me a lot of petrol money & the car is now outside my house but can anyone suggest anything I could try before I start getting someone else to look at it.

Thanks in advance

Andy
