I've just walked past an Aplina B5S cool, and it had what looked like a screen on the part of the dash that covers the instument binacle.
Would I be correct in thinking this is a projector for Heads Up Display?

They are soooo coool....

Not been in an E60 with it fitted, but sat in one with the ignition on.... sooo coool... And if you have satnav you get directions too! How cool is that?

Complete gimmick and gadget but I am sure that its one of those things that over time you wouldnt be able to live without. It used to be the case that satnav was the terminally lost, but today many wouldnt do without it. Should be the same for a HUD in a couple of years.

it's actually not a gimmick. It is a significant addition to safety as it allows the driver to keep his eyes on the road more of the time. All cars will have it within five to ten years.

newer car than the 5 series and the Corvette HUD looks like something cooked up by a teenager.

My S2 had one years ago. Being a TVR all the instruments were upside down, and it was so bright you could hardly see out of the windscreen at night, but that's TVR for you.

Yep,

Got HUD on my M5 (it's standard on UK M5's) Also had it on the 535d M-Sport i had before the M5.

It's most useful for the Sat-Nav as you don't need to take your eyes off the road to see your next turning/action etc.

In M-Mode you get a colour-coded rev counter (RAG) showing when you should be changing gear, as well as the SMG gear you're in. Personally i love HUD.

Pity! Maybe one day TVR will have the cash to execute its great ideas properly.

Hear hear.

TVR is a constant source of frustration for me as I'd love a Tamora, but I just can't accept the risk/likelihood of the engine falling out when I go to start it up in the morning.

I've often wondered why they don't follow the example of Lotus or Morgan and licence an engine that actually works from another manufacturer. The 4.0 litre N62 V8 from the E60 5-Series is good for 305bhp, and I'd gladly sacrifice the extra 45bhp from the Tamora in return for guaranteed reliability.
