I'd like to expunge the cup holders from my car and simply blank off the space they currently occupy. My feeble interweb skills do not run to finding said cup-holder-space-blanking-plates, though.

What's the proper name of this part? Does it even exist?

I have just checked my BMW TIS/ETK parts disc and it doesn't show or list any blanking plates for can holders on the early E39's

My old E39 528 SE had them but my current 530 Sport doesn't.

I have just had a look at the 530 and in the rear is a recessed trim piece that looks like it might replace the can holders on yours.

Unfortunately I couldn't get the bugger out to see if it had a part number on it and again its not listed on my disc.

Give a dealer a ring - it looks like you might be able to replace the rear (ask him to look at what is fitted to a Sept 02 530 Sport and he may be able to track it down)

On my old 528 I just took the can holders out, wedged the mechanism and put them back so they didn't open when knocked by passengers feet.

Good luck

Go to stealer and ask. It is a facelift part IIRC and cost a bit over 6 quid.

Can I have your rear?...So to speak

My kids keep knocking mine with their feet and I think they've knackered it.

Bugger .... I need rears too for teh same reason.

And also the fronts - so I'll have them if they are up for grabs.

The fronts work, but the rears are buggered.

I'll cheerfully drop them in a jiffy bag and send them off FOC once they're surplus to requirements.

Watch this space for cup-holder-banishment news!

You can buy a cubby hole that replaces the cup holders. Just got an genuine still packaged one off ebay for £12.
My rear has been buggered too
