Hi

Just got a new 330d m sport. I have had a couple of 330D's before. This one inparticular seems to vary quite drastically day to day on the kind of power and torque it is putting out.
Some days it feels like there is sufficient torque to tear the diff out and other days it feels a lot tamer. I always run esso or shell diesel.

Any one else had experiance of this?
Is down to air temp / density?

Any thoughts?

Is it an auto with a 'learn your driving style' gearbox?

Hi
Yes it has the adaptive gearbox but it is definately a variation in power / torque not gear change point. I have felt a similar variation in power on E46 330d's without the adaptive gearbox but not as severe.

My E46 330D Sport Auto pulls noticeably harder when driving late at night (and thus the temperature is lower). It feels a different car when you "make progress" and get the heat soak out of the I/C and get decent cool air flowing through it instead.

Mark,

I've not experienced the problem you describe. Mine is a manual though. It's done nearly 14k miles and is now run in nicely. It's reluctantly up for sale, but certainly not for any detrimental reasons. They're a brilliant car.

It may be worth getting it to your local dealer to see if anything shows up.

Cheers
Matt

I got my 330d msport touring about a month ago. I thought that I was taking a long time to get used to driving it as sometimes it needs a good prod to get going and other times it just takes off. I have started to put it in to sport mode every time that I make a standing start having had a couple of problems at junctions. I didn't know that it has an adaptive gearbox. Over what times span does it make a decision about how I am driving?

Forgot to mention, when I had the same problem on my new E46 330d m sport I took the car back to the dealer a few times, they couldn't find anything, but in the end i persuaded them to put me a new turbo on. This didn't seem to make any difference either!

from what people are saying and my experience the variation seems to be caused by heak soak in the intercooler (from standing still with engine running etc), combined with the variation air temp/humidity etc on any particular day. Maybe also the quality of fuel?

However why do these engines seem to vary more than other manufacturers TDi's?
