Rather Shocked TBH
Discussion
Went for a run this saturday with the girlfriend as it was a nice day. Decided to head down the Clyde coast as, it unfortunately turned out, half the geriatric shouldnt have a licence drivers of Glasgow.
In anycase, hooning was kept to a minimum and I mostly dawdled along with them on the country roads lapping up the scenery.
On arriving at Troon we stopped for some ice cream and I flicked through the trip computer. 41.5mpg! Its not even a diesel! It was a pleasant surprise to say the least.
Great car, great sounding engine and thats returning near enough the same ecconomy after 100k miles as my mums Z4 with the same engine, just out the box.
Well happy with the car thus far (ok only 2 weeks of ownership but its getting driven more and more often even though it was intended as a weekends only special car).

It appears to be fairly on the money comparing actual fuel put in to the car / miles travelled. On the last couple of tanks its been within 2mpg. These BMW trip computers do seem rather fickle, my fathers is accurate to within 1mpg typically on his 530d. Same technology on my girlfriends BMW Mini, both her first and second Coopers trip comps have been out by 4-6mpg.

I can't remember exactly how but I seem to remember it is possible to calibrate the computer for accuracy (or even inaccuracy!)oneself. I remember trying to do it on my E32 735i. Once on a trip with about 6 other E32 735i's in convoy everyone else was returning close to 30 mpg on a nice very gentle cruise whilst I was struggling to stop mine guzzling at an alarming 24-25mpg...and mine was by far the losest mileage car of the bunch with a meticulous service history. Having tried explored all other avenues to improve my mpg I hit upon the info somewhere that the trip comp is calibrateable (is there such a word?).
Anyway...turns out my trip computer was pretty accurate! Final outcome was that we discovered for '89-90 cars BMW changed the final diff ratio in response to some recently launched Mercedes so as to keep the edge on the Merc under acceleration!...Anyway, I digress...
Maybe you could look up and see if the same calibration thing can be done to your computer?

You can adjust the OBC, using one of the "secret" menus. It is described here www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/tips_pages/exploring528OBC.htm and you have to look for test 20, after having unlocked it (test 19).
I knew I remembered there was a way of doing it! That way when one comes to sell one's supercharged, twin-turbo'd 760iL one can show potential buyers unequivocal proof, via the OBC, that it is frugally sipping a mere 55 mpg at an overall average speed of 150 mph! And everyone walks away happy!
