Don said: What was it like, Jon? The pictures make it look butt-ugly AFAIC but, like many cars, it may be significantly more attractive in the metal...
Prepare to be disappointed then, Don.
We saw several in Florida last November. Not terribly pretty, although I'm sure darker colours would hide those awful lines a bit better. A product of Bangle's baby daughter, I think. So many panel lines at the front, it looks....confused. Muddled.
Interior was nice and functional as only a BMW can be, and the back end was nicer than the front, for sure. It looks less of a clown's shoe than a Z3, and its one saving grace was the leccy roof on it - it must have opened in less than 10 seconds - MUCH less. Only downside is that this roof will only feature on the top of the range models.
I don't know what the planned engines are - certainly a 3 litre, but I'm sure we eagerly await the 1.8 gutless version for the masses
6/10 - better than the Z3.
All MHO.
the only part of the z4 i like is the upper rear part of the boot... 4 circular lights and a slightly upturned lip... copied from the ferrari 550 maranello's rear I reckon. (please note that I am in no way saying that the z4 is anything like the 550... just before some speed reader misreads what I've just said!!!)
The one I saw had a winter hard-top on it, which made it look for all the world like a baby Viper GTS.
By that I mean very long bonnet and very short rear overhang coupled with a sloping roof.
Greg has pretty much said what I would have said anyway. I'd agree that it's far less of a clown's foot than the Z3 and far more grown-up and purposeful. But Bangle's "flame edging" or whatever the hell he calls it really doesn't work for me. Very fussy styling and all those creases and lines look very contrived and out of place. It didn't look very coherent and I feel that the car would have been better without the creases.
Thumbs down from me, I'm afraid.

I may be biased, as I drive a Z3 M Coupé...
I have never been a fan of the Z3 in standard guises, but put an M Coupé next to a Z4, and I will show which one is the more purposeful looking machine!
Think about it, the Z3 has been around since '96 and - admittedly because it is a retro car - has not dated too much, whereas I think the Z4 already now is dated. Just imagine how it is going to be in a year or so?

She's a beauty!!
Forget the TT if i was you and get in to a Z4 asap!
Z4's are already selling for over list and like the X5, M3 and the Z3 when launched looooooooong lead times
will mean high rv's and constent demand!
The only advantage you will get with the TT is a discount but short term savings mean you will have to wear a cricket box when you decide to change lol

I've just come back from California where I saw lots and it's definitely a grower. Time will tell if Bangle has got it right and started a new direction in car styling or just come up with a white elephant, but he should at least be applauded for daring to be different. Too many "me too" designs being produced these days IMHO.
Still wouldn't buy one though!

Nissan 350Z might be worth waiting for before making your final decision? Saw lots of them in the US as well and they look and sound great. Reviews i've seen say they drive well.
