2.8 litre and 193BHP???
Discussion
Did the 2.8 six really produce the same power as the old 2.5 or was BMW being coy for the then current german tax bracket? The 328i/528i had performance well beyond that of the 2.5 litre cars that came before, and I'm not sure it can just be explained by extra torque/longer gearing (The 528i's figures were almost suspicious!)
Get yourself to www.e36coupe.com, on there you will find out all about how and why BMW restricted the 323i and 328i engines. I believe it was because of the german tax laws being linked to power output. The 328i although having similar standard power output to the 325i has much better torque figures and when you change the inlet manifold to the non restricted one found on the 325i, plus a large bore throttle body, you instantly gain a very reliable 25-30bhp............and much improved engine.....

It's most definitely not because a tax laws. In Germany, cars are taxed by engine displacement (per 100cm³. IIRC, 193PS has been a boundary for 3rd party insurances.
After introducing the 2.8l, BMW continued the 2.5l in a detuned state as 323i in order to not annoy people who bought a 325i just before. The 328i however, is MUCH torquier at low revs than the 192PS-325i!!
