In the last couple of days I have updated (without the help of stealer) my E46 16:9 Sat Nav to the latest operating system which, in a hidden menu, includes the option of a Tom-Tom like perspective view.

Have tested properly now and I must say it's a massive improvement. This combined with the post code searching available on the latest Nav maps brings the BMW system right up to date.

Quite happy to point people in the right direction to do this cost effectively if there is interest.

I have managed to find the hidden menu on mine and turned the perspective view setting on.

I also have the latest DVD but cannot figure out how to find or get the postcode setting to work.

Do you have to do a software upgrade for this or am I missing something ?

Any help much appreciated .....

Ok cool. That seems like enough interest. I will write up some gumpth this afternoon (Babies are time consuming little critters!).

One of the things you all need to work out is what SatNav systems you have, the choices are as follows:

Professional or High - Says on the Map disc in your boot.

DVD or CD - Again says on the Map disc.

Which Map CD/DVD version e.g. 2006-01 Again it says on the map disc.

Which software you have and which CD/DVD drive you have.

Check out this link for the answer to the final two questions:

Postcodes search? Not perfect, but it does work as follows-

Suppose you are getting to RG21 4JD; put in RG21 4 into the 'City/PC' line via the alpahnumeric input. Gets you close enough then you can narrow down by road, number, junction whatever.

TBH, things like the TomTom are now light years ahead of the factory fit items, and 1/10th the price.

Hmm not sure about that , the satnav in my Audi was brilliant , and TomToms are not built in - integrated into the car and as we all know satnav is a must come resale time

Ah yes... and who decides what is good come resale time? The same dealers who sell the first owner a £2k integrated sat nav... didn't seem to count for a lot when I came to sell my 330Ci in which I'd shelled out for a factory sat nav system. Probably more critical in M3s etc.

I do like the built in systems (as you say the Audi ones have the edge), but I have been very impressed with the full postcode inputs, perspective views etc found on the £200 TomToms et al.

No not the dealers the Punters do , i would not buy a car with out it unless it was a rare or older type

the dealers just react to sales

i don't know why people have to hold on to information. i can't see what this achieves or fulfils. why do they need to feel they have to make people beg?

anyway, after doing some searching i found this and am willing to share it immediately with everyone.

here's the link and below is the specific piece of text

www.x5world.com/navigation-system/12502-nav-os-v27-has-been-released.html?highlight=hidden+menu

(there should be a plus sign between hidden and menu at the end of the url above - with no gaps)

To activate the Perspective view mode with V27 you need to do the following (thanks to 2Wires for this info):
Go to the main menu and then settings. Press the menu button for about 10 seconds until a new menu appears. Check "Perspective". Voilá. Perspective mode is now available.

Beg my arse - was trying to get this sorted but a new born baby doesn't leave much time you know? Glad to see you have the ability to judge my intent with no knowledge.

Anyone with half a wit could have a look around X5 world I just wanted to share the E46 particulars and the problems in writing the operating system to CD as it is not as easy as they make out on that site.
