Agree with both of the above...but doesn't that bring us back to the old chestnut?

I'd love one of these cars...I could even afford to buy one outright...but I couldn't afford an £8000 Vanos bill...nor would I wish to pay for the now astronomic warranty renewal premium!...along with all of it's "exclusions and excesses"! I suspect I'm not alone in this position?

Kind of a 'rock and hard place' situation.

I reckon it depends from whence you arrive at the potential punt...

Second hand RS6 values rarely trip beneath the high £20ks level and whilst you might argue the Audi superior, if you were in that budgetary ground, a £15k M5 leaves you plenty scope for any of this dreaded work (which isn't necessarily quite that expensive anyway.)

The s/charged E55 AMG is even more expensive and in both these cases, contemporary tests reckoned a fully wrung (E39) M5 could just about keep them within lock-on distance and let's be honest, if your M5 fails to be fully wrung several times a week, what on earth is the point? heheevil

Schnell, SCHNELL!!

Most reports suggest the M5 would be more of a drivers car as well.

I think the most important thing with an e39 M5 is a good dealer.

We had our Vanos replaced at BMW expenses even though our car is out of warranty. I just pointed out to them the good old SOGA, and that the Vanos appears to be a known fault. I also politely mentioned that i would cancel my new car order with them unless they could demonstrate that their M cars weren't under engineered.

From what I understand the cost of a BMW Main dealer doing the work on rebuilding the VANOS on the M5 is between £7000 and £9000 so seems to be an average of the £8k mark. However, you must put this into perspective though. This is what the customer sees on the invoice from the Main dealer to the customer - i.e. what is submitted to BMW for the waranty payment.

If you walked in from the street with a sick M5 and was paying cash (or more likely credit card) would it cost this much? Well, the jury is out but we all know that the warranty game is pretty well known. BMW obviously know exactly what needs to be done to fix the VANOS and how many hours it takes. It wouldnt take much to figure out that everyone puts in warranty claims for the exact amount, if not more.... does it really take x man hours and x number of widgets? Probably not, but its easy money for the dealer (or is the stealer) and hence we see these high figures.... chances are it didnt take that long or cost that much.... but thats the warranty game for you.

BUT, if you use an indie then you are looking at much less than that - some are saying less than £6000 and even down to £4000...

Fair point,

In discussing it with the service manager, he did point out that the cost to BMW would be more like £5 grand or so rather than the price as passed onto the customer. However, a strong comment about underengineering, expecially on a 60K miler I would have imagined should bring the cost down a bit. Or go down the usual Watchdog style threat route, you'll probably get the parts thrown in for free if you really push it with the head office. Unfortunately, all this time you have a sick car on your hands.

None the less; if you want to buy mine, its been done! So you need not worry!!!!!
