Is this the sort of car that can be looked after at home with regards to services etc

Any feedback from owners who service their cars most welcome thumbup

I am thinking of a car around say five to six years old with aboute 80k on the clock.

I have some engineering know how.

You'll want an extended warranty, which will be around £2k a year plus £250 excess, beware of VANOS failure, check the BMW forum for the guy who bought one similar only for the VANOS to fail soon after.

I only know about some "little" vanos problems with the E36 S50 engine's...but when you do google those M5 "problems I'm sure you will find some answers, but all in all I believe their quit good, maked for many miles when good oil!! is used, the BMW M engines have to have only the recommanded oil for that type engine, I believe the same oil as mine uses "Castrol TWS 10w 60"
Enjoy, you no that 5th gear driver euhm??? that sliding carman Tiff yes...he realy loves that V8 M5 see the older top gear movies...
have fun, at the end of the day its all machinery/tech that can go wrong at some point, even the best taken care of car! when it all looks good and feels good have a go...its fun

You might want to have a butchers over on the UK M board for additional information :

www.bm3w.co.uk/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php

Or over on the US as those guys seems to have been at the front of the queue in relation to issues:

www.m5board.com/vbulletin/index.php?

A BMW warranty will give peace of mind but at £1800 per year to renew, personally I've stuck the money in the bank just in case I need it. I've had mine two years (a Jan 2001 car with no warranty), stuck 59k miles on the clock and have been quids in, with only a couple of minor issues - replaced 02 sensors and a failed actuactor in the front passenger door locking mechanism.

Other than that I've had an Insp 1, an Oil Service, an Insp 2 and another Oil service done as per the dash lights - normally about 16k miles between them. New discs and pads 54k miles back and I'm on my 2nd set of tyres.

Buy wisely and test several,
