I've just bought my first M3, an E36 Evo saloon.

It currently has 4x 225/45/17 tyres on but all need replacing - I think I read somewhere that the front and rear tyres should be different sizes, can anyone confirm that?

Also, can anyone recommend a decent tyre to fit? I don't intend on track'ing the car, and would like the tyres to last as long as possible....

Cheers.

The 225/45s are correct if you are running on 7.5J rims.
With the wider 8.5J rims you can run 245/40s at the rear and 235/40s on the 7.5J fronts which is what my 3.0 runs.
Tyre choice is very open. A few weeks ago I'd have said Michelin Pilot SPort PS2's but a friend just had a 2 week old one delaminate on him on a dyno and Michelin told him him it was his fault so I'll never use them again.
Goodyear F1 Eagles are spoken of very highly on most BMW forums although I've never used them myself.
Have a look on www.e36coupe.com/forum for a detailed tyre discussion.

I think its generally accepted that 225/45/17's are best up front as they reduce understeer over the 235's and as Paul says, 245/40/17's at the back are best.

Over 300bhp on 225 section tyres just doesn't sound right does it?!

Thanks guys - I've got a saloon with the 5 spoke alloys, not sure what size these are as I've only had it 5 minutes! Will the 245s fit on the rear with these wheels?

GSD F1s you'll find are quite good / reasonably priced.
