Ive been fortunate (or misfortunate enough depending how you look at it) to have been given a 55 plate 530d M sport hire car whilst an insurance claim goes through for the total loss of my old modded Volvo S60 T5 (A talentless Honda Civic driver travelling toward me failed to negotiate a left hand bend and wiped me out!)
Anyway Id kind of been hankering after a 535d for a while due to my £250 a week Optimax habit and was so impressed with the 530d's oomph I thought Id take a 535d M sport out for a spin with a view to placing an order.
It was clearly faster in the mid and upper range but the throttle response at the bottom end felt considerable slower to a point where the 530 felt substantially quicker away from the lights.
The test 535 car only had 700 miles on it but could this a contributable factor in its sluggishness?
Any 535d owners out there that could enlighten me.....I felt kind of dissapointed as I had my cheque book with me and everything!
The other bizarre thing was the car on standard 18" run flat tyres seemed to ride worse that on the optional 19" wheels with normal tyres fitted!

The runflats have stiffer sidewalls hence the poor ride quality.
Also, I understand the 530d is available with a manual gearbox whilst the 535d is automatic only - can anyone confirm this?

True - the new shape five series is manual or auto,
SE or sport, giving four variants per engine size,
until you get to the 535d, which is auto only.
Then there's the 545 petrol, which is SE or sport, and
manual, SMG or auto, giving six variants.
All the shapes, in all the sizes.
Personally, I'm waiting for the I-distract system
to be changed from mandatory to optional extra, then
I'm in the market for a 535D SE.
I tested both cars (both autos) before I made the decision to buy a 535d. The 535d is quicker in every situation and it does not have the lag nor the diesel-like sound (apart from when at standstill/1-2k rev range when pulling away) but it did sacrifice some fuel economy to the 530d.
If you're doing driving in town/city traffic expect 27-28mpg but up to 35mpg at motorway cruising speeds.
I also changed to normal Goodyear 19" tyres from the runflats (with E60 M5 alloys) and rides it much much better than the runflats did.
And on top of that, if you want more power, responsiveness and slightly better economy a lot of people opt to have a DMS remap (pushes the bhp to about 340). Lots of satisfied reviews of them can be found on the e60.net forums. I would get it done but have now been smitten by an RS4 hence I'm selling mine (in the classified section).

i-distract then i-crash is more apt.
Horrible.
My understanding is that when the new 5 series was introduced,
the prices on the old E39 5 series went UP, not down,
in response to the new model.
Was I-Drive to blame ? I am not sure.
Also, I might be dreaming this, but with a later car
[ 3 series ? ] and later I-Distract system, wasn't it made an optional extra instead of mandatory as on the new 5 series ?
Clarification sought.
iDrive is fine. Just spend 30 minutes taking yourself for look around it, and it is actually quite well thought out. Just jumping in a renter or your mate's car and trying to fathom it out will not work.
If people can't use it, they haven't tried. They have the Clarkson disease... Intellectual laziness.

The reason iDrive is an option on lower 3 Series models is becasue they are cheaper.
Angus puts it succinctly. Only iDiots can't use iDrive.
