Had my 1990 E30 325iS MOT'd (or not, as it happens), and it spanked it for the folloing reasons:

Horn not working (i know for a fact its a fuse) so not worried about that.
Chassis has 2 spots to weld - fair enough
steering rack leaking fluid, and apparently steering rack buggered - I knew the pump had let all the fluid out, but surely I'd realise if the rack was gone!
headlight beam too high - no probs sorting that out...

What really grips my sh1t is that I took it there to get some 4-pots and new disks fitted, along with hoses, and I ended up spending over a grand. It should have cost about 180, but they rang me every other day saying 'oooh thats on its way out' and 'so's that' and 'oh all the bolts sheered off because its an old car, you'll need to get some new ones of those too'... Constantly mentioning its an MOT fail if I didnt, so I naively agreed.

They clearly are out to fleece for cash in my opinion, given what 'problems' they have materialised for my car throughout the summer, knowing that I can afford to pay..

The position Im in though, is that I need to get this work dont ASAP, the welding is easy enough, anyone can do that for me... and the lights and horn I can solve myself, but my main concern is the steering rack...

Could anyone shed some light on where I can get a used one on the cheap? I also heard that an E36 rack is better and is doable in an E30. Does anyone know how much it needs modifying to fit into the E30?

Anyone with any ideas of prices (for either rack) along with estimated labour costs would be highly appreciated!

Cheers!

Actually, steering rack failure on the E30 325i is an extremely common problem...I'd be surprised if there are many left 'average mileage' where the car is still running on an original rack.

IIRC when I once had to have one repleced it's not hugely expensive.
