I am trying to sell my Subaru STI 2003 so that i can get an M5....

I was thinking of the TVR, but after hearing all the horror stories i have decided not to go for one...though loveley cars...

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=304153

Reson why i want an M5:

Cheeper to insure then my current STI (i foudn that hard to believe..but it is)
Better fuel consumption then the STI
Luxuary in comparision
and a great smooth drive

Now one thing i am unsure about is what was the diffirence between a 1999 model and a 2001 model?
Can the small Sat Nav be changed for the Wide Screen Version?

The update meant that the lights were changed slightly and thats about it. The facelift brings the celis rear lights and the angel eye fronts. I am sure that there are a few other small tweaks but basically thats about it. To be honest the update does look better and more modern than the older ones, but its a personal thing at the end of the day. I think the satnav was updated though.

The standard sized screen can be replaced with a wide screen version and I understand that its a fairly simple swap. Though, you need to be sure of the versions involved. For example (not that I have seen it on an M5) you can get just the TV without Satnav. If that is the case then you need to get the satnav wiring loom and the computer - not cheap. Alternatively if you get a standard screen pre-facelift and try to replace it with a post-facelift widescreen then it might not work. It might require an update to the computer (CD or DVD) or even a replacement of the whole unit. In general the units are plug-and-play, but there are few things to bear in mind.

To be honest, most M5's are pretty highly spec'ed in the first place so you will usually find that it either has satnav or it hasnt. If its got the smaller screen, dont worry - its still pretty good. Though I am lead to believe that an upgrade of the system to the version 4 (IIRC) is worth the money if you can afford it. This brings it from CD mapping to DVD mapping and if you have the TMC module as well you get the traffic alerts and latest maps.... its not cheap though. Check Ebay for the information on prices - as for how to do it, try a google search. There are a few guides as to the parts and information about it.....

As I understand it there was a significant change to the piston ring design too which resulted in better oil consumption figures. Although my 2001 still used a litre in as little as 1500 miles.

Yep, thats right. But the "fix" was available for pre-2000 models. However, it was not a change to the piston ring design but in the circulation of oil for the VANOS system. It means that it does help and post 2000 models dont sound as bad as pre ones at start up.... but its all relative and they do have a nasty "bag-o-bolts" noise at start up....

That is incorrect.

Ring design on post 03/2000 engines was different and was altered after this date.

The Vanos pre charge pump was a BMW 'fix' for noisy start up issues, and can be retrofitted to pre facelift cars.

Best advice when buying an M5?

BMW warranty, i've had over 10k's worth of work in the last month alone on mine, and there is more to come.

Forget about toys.....focus on the drive......

Went to see a M5 (March 2000) do you think this is ok? (sorry little confused by this post)

Also It has the standard SATNAV / TV, is this easily changable? IE Take out and put the wide one in?
