Is this some sort of scam? - how does it work?

yes it is, more than likely they will ask for a deposit to hold the car and that will be that. Will be a hacked account. Always dodgy when they ask to email to an email address rather than through ebay.

Seller has been a member in the United States since 1999.... yet the car is in Hatfield !! Sounds so genuine. tumbleweed

I have seen a few of these on egay!

The last one was going for 5k so I sent an email saying "im sure this is a scam! - Would you take 4k!

They never got back to me funny enough....

This one has been removed as they all do in the end.

I think they clone an account and buy feedback - tossers
