Dont know what kind of response I am going to get to this having searched X5 on this forum (for two years!) and come up with..... nothing.....tumbleweed

I'm thinking of buying a used X5 as the family lugger: About 2-3 years old, preferably the 'facelift' model, under 25K miles, Deisel, other wish list items would be leather and sat nav: Looked in acouple of dealers and BMW web site - prices generally over £30K : Autotrader etc some from about £26K.

I suppose the new model out next Spring might depress prices a bit later this year?

Two questions please:

Any advice on what to look out for with the X5 3.0D

Any thoughts on good independant dealers (in the south of England preferably) that are worth a look at:

Thanks

thought about one of these myself

however, if you can find a nice spec diesel, under 3 yrs old and under £25k then please let me know...cos that's what I'd like and I don't think it's do-able

The facelift is the problem. Pre-facelift cars are a real bargain, but if you want the current shape the dealers really shake you down. It was the same with the Merc ML.

If you like the look of the facelift (rather than just wanting current model) it might be worth waiting for the new model to hit the street, that'll put downward pressure on them.

The 3.0D is a good choice, it's got enough stonk to shift it relatively briskly and doesn't drink that badly (the 3.0i really likes a drink and isn't much quicker, unless you really ring it out).

To a degree I would ignore the dealer prices and make a silly offer. I ended up paying 4k less for my x5 than the dealer was originally asking. Also have to ask if the diesel is absolutely necessary. I ended up going for the 4.4 sport which has averaged around 22mpg over the last year. I think in the current environment it is the bargain of the x5 range. You could be talking 5k less than the diesel equivalent in terms of your purchase price which buys quite a lot of petrol. Either car is very nice to live with.

Have a look at X5world.com. Lots of useful information on that site albeit mostly stateside. Not had an X5 diesel before, but I think there are some standard things to do regardless. IMHO avoid certain external colours like green unless it's really cheap, and light colour leather and wood the same.

I think manual was only available on the petrol, so obviously auto, comms pack with bluetooth is useful other than that try and get as many options as you can.

I'd certainly get a warranty and it might be worth considering buying from an authorised dealer if you can get it cheap enough.

The boy Thomas is after one of these for his stable and will by Saturday have committed to a superb 4.4i V8 example.

Awesome, awesome piece of kit, Hector McJoust, eminent noble and known for choice selections in the world of such things, also pilots one; he is a firm fan.

If a neighbouring vulgarian (solicitor, aren't they all?) didn't have one, I'd be in there like a shot myself but at £2.51 versus £300/hour I'm resigned to depositing a skip from the local gypsy community yard outside his mockney facade and daubing his walls with the tirade, 'yuppie scum,' something which has inspired my life since the magnificent American Psycho.

I'm sure you'll be eminently delighted.

This could affect prices more than the new model coming out........

You're not wrong there, my Lord - I mean - look at LS430 prices now; golfers, everywhere, bailing out by the score!

i owned an early one and a facelift both d sports.
i lost plenty of ££s on both as they were new purchases.
i wish i had kept the first one and chipped it, as the facelifts only real advantage (imho) was the extra performance.
i also had one without nav and it was real hard to shift.
sensible advice would be wait a bit until the new model is out early 07, the current owners will be trading in.
i often wondered about gassing a 4.6/4.8 but wasn't confident enough following a few issues with my company's lpg conversions.

Wow this site is 'kin amazing.... I've never seen so much information on one model ( I usually lurk in the TVR forums where no one is really sure about any model - every individual car seems to be different.... different colour elastic bands , different colour string, different coulour gaffa tape - you get the message...

Thanks for the advice guys....

Any thoughts on Indie dealers ?

Thanks
