Is there a general consensus on the value of BMW service packages?

I'll be picking up my new Z4 Coupe (3.0si, not M) at the end of next month. First brand new car I've ever owned, so all sorts of new decisions to be made. One of which is what to do about servicing - i.e. keep the cash and take it on the chin when the time comes or fork out now for one of the BMW packages.

For "Service" it would be £435 for 3 years or £680 for 5 years. For "Service and Maintenance" it's £825 and £1275 respectively. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the latter package covers brake discs & pads and clutch.

I'll be doing about 10,000 miles a year, keeping the car for 3 years minimum, and not driving the nuts off it (well, not too often).

So, oh wise and learned PH'ers, any advice? Any bad experiences?

Thank you!

Three years makes it a bit tricky I guess. If you're selling privately you might get some extra money? Always seems hard when selling though.

Since I intended to keep 535d for at least 5 years I thought it was a no brainer, however I didn't realise the oil change intervals had changed from 10k to 20kish miles, so I can see how they don't lose money now. Didn't bother with maintenance since it's auto (no clutch to replace) and should only need a single set of pads.

From those figures it seems to be 50/50 on whether it would be worth the money.

The maintenance package will include consumables like brake components and exhausts.

The service intervals on the Z4 are every 15k miles (approx) or 2 years, so you'd probably catch a minor and a major in your three year ownership. I'd expect that to total about £600 to £650 for both. You can also expect to get through a set of brake pads, but I doubt you'll need discs or an exhaust. Anything major will be covered on warranty anyway.

I'd not bother with the maintenance deal, as you'll not get through consumables very quickly unless you thrash the sh*t out of it. So I'd be inclined to get the 3-year servicing package only. The £245 extra for the 5-year will be more than the minor service that you'd catch in the extra two years, and you'll not get anything for it if you part-ex the car.

Thank you - you're absolutely right - having looked at the service costs there really is little to be gained from going for the service package on this car, given the sort of mileage I'll be doing etc.

On balance, I'm going to leave it, save the money, and bear the service costs as and when they come up. If I was going to be doing 20k miles a year, or if it would regularly be driven very hard, I might think differently.

Thanks again

I just need to sell the old 6 series now... www.pistonheads.com/sales/89531.htm

Incidentally - has anyone else been plagued by phone calls from the various agencies who charge you £80-100 "to match you up with a list of buyers just ready and waiting to buy your car, at the full asking price, sir"...??
