Asked in a dealership at the weekend about this, specs look good with a 0-60 in 6 seconds. Price should be about £35k, looks tempting!

Sounds like fun, 282 bhp, 428 lbs-ft, 10+15 up on the 535d, slightly lighter engine i am told.

Looks like we are moving ever nearer the genuine diesel sports car?

TBH I would much rather a 535d for the family/business/motorway/holidays etc. and a seperate sports car. But if that sports car happens to be a 997 C2S, you are looking at over 100K.....

So that 335d sounds quite good

You can get to it (335i and 335d) on the configurator on the BMW website....trouble is when I spec'd what I wanted it ended up at £40k without satnav...yikes... way to much..

The recent stuff in the motoring press have put the engine at 286BHP (same as the old E39/E38 4.4 V8!). So you buy one, run it for a year and then get a DMS chip - +35BHP. Then wait another year and do the exhaust too - +15BHP and you have 330+BHP and still can turn 40+MPG if you can take it easy.....

Potentially stunning motor.... I mean, a 535d which has been DMS'ed can crack 100MPH in 13 seconds. Think a slightly lighter car and a better power to weight ratio and its a bit of a monster. Potential to go 993 and 996 baiting if you ask me.... (though need to be careful which model you do go baiting, as it could be embarasing - though the BMW is still a diesel!!!)

My 535d has 334 bhp with just the DMS remap, so a 335d with map and exhaust would be about 350 bhp i would think?

surely the 335d will be auto only though? - doesn't make it the 'genuinely sporty diesel' in my book therefore

I'm one of the anti 'derv brigade' at the moment after a bad experience with an Audi TDi - is the 335d enough to make me change my mind....i.e will it rev?, will it sound nice?, will it have a power band that's wider than 1k revs?

It is certainly an Auto...but will have steering column mounted paddles which should help it feel more sporty..

Standard spec is not really that good for a ~£36k car... loads of "extras" should be standard in my mind (leather etc).

when is 'standard spec' ever that good on German cars?

my plan would be to get a 'standard' motorsport spec and leave it at that....although I still favour a 335 petrol

No leather then ? Amongst other things (satnav etc) expected for re-sale...well that is what everyone says.

When I tried to sell my Clubsport I got people turning noses up as it did not have xenons, satnav.... I had H&K, CD changer, centre armrest and leather...still not enough. Get spec wrong and re-sale can be hard.

company car so I get fleeced for the full value of options in the lease with no benefit on resale

rather have a 'basic' 335 than a spec'd up 325 if you know what I mean

cheaper and more effective to get some after-market ICE upgrade than H&K IMO (certainly is with my current Audi BOSE set up)

looked on BM website- are you actually going to be able to get an M Sport 335 (or would that be too close to the new M3?)

Well, my car revs nicely from 1.5 k revs to 5.1 k revs, sounds good from inside when you boot it and i reckon is sporty-ish feeling.
I would think that a slightly lighter engine, in a slightly lighter car, producing the same power would be rather good.

The current generation autoboxes are great but from what I have read, the 335i and 335d will get the new faster changing and better auto. Not sure what the differences are - but if its an improvement on the existingly good one then its going to be good.

Dont get me wrong - they buy them in from ZF I think. But they are widely regarded as excellent in pretty much anything these days - Aston DB9's, Mercs of all sorts (before the silly 7-tronic jobbies) and Jags of all shapes and sizes....

Must have a test drive when I get a chance....

I'd rather have the last of the E46 M3s. Get rid of the boot-lid model inscription, colour code the vents (remove M3 decals too), and replace the bling 19s with something from BBS.
